Los Indios Tabajaras

Certainly the most uncommon duo of Brazilian artists to have a solid international career, Los Índios Tabajaras was formed by the brothers Antenor Moreyra Lima (Muçaperê) and Natalício Moreyra Lima (Erundi). In the U.S. they had success in the early '70s with "Sakura-Sakura," and their biggest hit was the fox trot "Maria Helena," which won second place at the American charts and sold over one-and-a-half million copies. Their 48 LPs also sold millions of copies worldwide, and they toured South, Central, and North America, Asia, and Europe before settling in the U.S. Their eclectic act gathered Rimsky-Korsakoff, Chopin, De Falla, and Villa-Lobos with folk tunes and originals, performed in tuxedo and also half-naked with Indian ornaments. In the '60s, they also performed successfully at the San Remo Festival (Italy). Both self-taught musicians, they took their first contact with the violão (guitar) during their journey through the hinterlands of Cariri, Ceará, but had to give it away for a pound of beans. Having both studied music later, Muçaperê was accompanied in the recording of his "Their Very Special Touch" by a full symphonic orchestra and vocal choir.

Indians from the Tabajara tribe, they left Ceará with their people in 1933, traveling on foot the almost 2,000 km to Rio de Janeiro. During the three years spent on the journey, they collected a number of regional musics. In Rio de Janeiro they were registered and baptized by the lieutenant Hildebrando Moreira Lima, from whom they took their Christian names. Their first public performance was in 1945, at the Rádio Cruzeiro do Sul (Rio de Janeiro), when they were introduced as Índios Tabajaras, having been hired by the outing. In 1953, they recorded an album through Continental with the baião "Tambor Índio" and the galope "Acara Cary" (both by Muçaperê). In the next year they had success with the polka "Pajaro Campaña" (public domain). After recording several other albums, they left in 1957 for a tour through Argentina, Venezuela, and Mexico. Having both studied music in the latter, Erundi wrote several classic pieces for guitar during that period . Moving on to the U.S., they performed for three years in that country, and returned to Brazil in 1960. They continued to move around, but ended up back in Brazil in 1968, where they recorded an album of Hawaiian songs; they moved to the U.S. soon afterwards. ~ Alvaro Neder, Rovi

Los Indios were the first record album I ever purchased. Electric guitar music was never for me. I love Spanish guitar music. Almost 50 years later, this recording sounds better on my iPhone than it did on my little record player.
Maria Elena reminds me when I was a child it was played in my town all the times. What beautiful memories! And what an enjoyment to listen to this music again after so many years. Thank u Pandora!

I've loved this sound since the 50's as a little girl. Married a Latin in the 70's because I loved the Latin scene at that time in SF and Marin. I still do!
The best for the soul

Who did the original Maria Elena that was released somewhere around 1959 to 1962. That was the one I was looking for but Los Indios' version is really good too.

I purchased all of their albums -vinyl, of course- way way back. Johnny Carson had these two guys on his show. Gave them the exposure they needed to get popular. Glad to see that their music is still liked! If you like this kind of traditional music from Paraguay, check out some of the Cd's featuring Paraguayan Harp music. It will knock you out!!
I never hear about this duo. El requinto (la guitarra) es tocado con una perfeccion unica. Muy buen tema.
Very nice. Can't believe I've never heard this before. I learned of this duo from a compilation album called Blue Suenos.

Actually, There is a mistake, the song is "Pajaro Campana", and in Spanish means, Bell Bird, is a guarani leyend, very popular in Paraguay, Id say is almost like the national anthem.

Coming from a Clasical background, and loving guitar, I enjoy Eliot Fisk, The Romeros, etc. But...there is something magical about the brother's romance with guitar stings..... They breath soul into every note.....
These guys make a guitar sing like angels.
They are truly awsome....to bad theres not another like them today
incredible talent...we are trully blessed to have them in our midst. the depth of maria elena is indescribabl e . . .

There was not, there is not and there will not be another pair of guitars like "Los Indios Tabajaras". They are the Most polished and sophisticate d musicians in history. Nobody can play the guitar like they do. Listen to "La Ronde de Lutins", or Chopin on their guitar, or "Blue Angel" that they wrote, "Flight Of the BumbleBee", or Tchaikoiski and you will understand what I'm talking about. Their mastery of the guitar, their arrangements and their taste is unmatchable.
Enjoy
