Anton Webern

December 3, 1883 - September 15, 1945
born in Vienna, Austria, composed during the Modern period
Anton Webern (1883-1945) was a modernist Austrian composer and a member of what is called the Second Viennese School. Webern was a student of Arnold Schoenberg and a friend of Alban Berg, and the three composers were the most important practitioners of twelve tone or dodecaphonic music. The delicate sounds, efficient techniques, and extreme brevity of Webern's music inspired the generation after him to develop serial music, derived in part from his rigorous methods. A virtual hostage of the Nazis during World War II, Webern was tragically shot and killed by an American soldier in Mittersill, months after the war ended. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi

I really enjoy the three Little Pieces. I'm so glad I learned about him in music class.
Like most composition majors, I studied musicology for four years, and Webern is a favorite. That was a long time ago, and later interpretati o n s could suggest otherwise, but the explanation offered by wjacks29 is closer to the events I studied (some say he was pulling out his ID when he was shot). What should be mentioned here: Webern was a pacifist and remained ardently pro-Semitic. He was the antithesis of someone whom an American soldier ought to have shot. His murder is posterity's loss.

Webern lives!
Actually, according to Boston University Musicologist Joel Sheveloff, Webern died when he stumbled upon a black market deal gone sour. He was killed in the ensuing shootout.

do you know how Webern died? It was during the occupation of Vienna by American forces. He stepped out on his front porch to have a cigarette. A nearby soldier thought this was a signal to spies - and shot Webern on the spot.
