Story studied classical piano while growing up in Southern California and even thought about becoming a music librarian or theorist for a while. Then she heard jazz pianist Bill Evans at a New York club, and the experience changed her perspective on music overnight. Story, who had studied at Juilliard and was enrolled at Hunter College at the time, abandoned her academic program in favor of jazz lessons with Sanford Gold, a teacher Evans had recommended. Back in Los Angeles, she continued her musical education at UCLA and the Dick Grove Music Workshops, but it was a job playing piano at a French restaurant that sparked her major breakthrough as a composer. Since the front casing of the piano was missing, Story had no place to put her sheet music and was forced to improvise freely. Eventually, she put some of her spontaneous compositions on tape and sent them to Windham Hill. Within four days, Will Ackerman had called her back and the contract was signed for her first release, Solid Colors, an album of impressionistic piano miniatures. Over the course of five recordings, including a two-album stint with RCA Novus, Story's style has expanded to include electronic duets with Mark Isham and works for various types of ensembles, yet the piano remains the prominent voice in her finely crafted compositions. ~ Linda Kohanov, Rovi

Sounds like the opening to Sketches of Spain over and over. I'd rather hear Sketches of Spain.
I had the great pleasure and good fortune of interviewing Liz Story over the course of two days when she was in Washington, D.C. on her 1985 tour. I still have the cassette recordings of my interviews with her, which mostly had to do with philosophy and musical aesthetics. She was a really deep thinker and I was a music grad student and former undergrad philosophy major who had a mad crush on her. :-) Her music has the same appeal 25+ years later.
This is music to do homework by: it's soothing for being indoors, yet kinda has that jazzy edge to keep me awake and aware of life outdoors...Tim Story's music is a bit like that, too, along with Peter Kater...
I must admit I was listening to this stuff in the mid 80s when everyone else was listening to hair metal bands and bad synth 80s rock,I saw her open for michael hedges,I was in my early twentys - very nice piano melodies,I think its from the solid colours album,I kind of lost touch with liz over the years,I am sure she is still playing.
Wow, whatever genre they tag her with, she's good. Kind of like hearing Pat Matheny for the first time; Where is he going with this theme? But also with Liz Story, you still listen - and already knew.
Love Ms. Story's music. Her Holiday selections are a must for any collection of instrumental music.

I didn't know that she toured. If yes, where does she post her schedule? Lovely music, powerful, yet very subtle and nuanced. The symbol? An uroboros (ouroboros) ancient, mystical, alchemical; From thence I go, to here return. Wholeness, regeneration, infinity.

airjockk, she usually tours with the winter solstice gang from windham hill... I've seen her 3 times. She is a laugh riot! Not what you'd expect from the gorgeous music she plays...
Love, love, love Liz Story. I have seen her live and she is wonderful. I saw her perform at MusicFest in Lehigh Valley, PA. www.artsquest.org to see if she will return!
Sometimes a musician comes along who can communicate on such a deep and profound level that the only thing to say is that person is gifted. Well, Liz Story is, indeed, gifted.
