Lenny Breau

An outstanding jazz improviser who performed on both acoustic and electric guitars, Lenny Breau's right hand drew on classical, flamenco, and country (Travis/Atkins) finger-picking techniques. He was among the first guitarists to digest the impressionistic, post-bop chord voicings of pianist Bill Evans. Breau developed the ability to simultaneously comp chords and improvise single-string melodies, creating the illusion of two guitarists playing together. His facility with artificial harmonics remains the envy of many guitarists. Late in his career, Breau began using a seven-string guitar that extended the instrument's range in the upper register. Breau's early RCA recordings are eclectic and technically dazzling. His later work is less flashy, but communicates on a deeper level.

Born to Canadian country music singers, Lenny Breau started out playing country in a sophisticated manner. Chet Atkins himself helped Breau get an RCA recording contract in 1968. However, Breau's jazz-oriented style and remarkable technique quickly caused him to be uncategorizable. Problems with drugs made his career erratic and he is now considered an underground guitar legend. A new label (Guitararchives) was formed in 1995 specifically to release private tapes of his performances. ~ Richard Lieberson & Scott Yanow, Rovi

My Mom was raised with Lenny and was a very good friend of his...I never met Lenny but Chet said after he had passed that Lenny was the best guitar player that he ever knew...Bless e d Trails Lenny...RIP. . . Y o u will be missed

Hey Jimi C:
Gee it has to be embarrassing to scream out a post like yours in that all caps condescendin g know it all tone that obviously has zero seconds of research behind it. One only needs to look at his guitars to see the fourth peg on the neck to know where the additional string is. Don't hold your breath waiting on a call from Pandora, I think they can figure it out without you. You may now head back to your scatology lab for some deep self analysis.
Lenny is a master of the guitar.
Don't read this because it actually works. You will get kissed on the nearest possible Friday by the love of your life. Tomorrow will be the best day of your life. However if you don't post this you will die in 2 days. Now you've started reding this so don't stop. This is so scary put this on at least 5 songs in at least143 minutes when if done press f6 and your lovers name will come on the screen in big letters this is Scary cuz it actually works!
Nope, He did add a 7th string above the high e
EXTENDED THE UPPER REGISTER OF HIS GUITAR.... REALLY?!?! EVERY OTHER 7 STRING I HAVE ENCOUNTERED EXTENDS THE LOWER REGISTER OF THE GUITAR. IF YOU NEED DECENT EDITORIAL STAFF, LET ME KNOW PANDORA....
Lenny Breau mastered and transcended the guitar as few in jazz have (contrapunta l l y ) - T e d Greene- George Van epp`s. He mastered convention early, findin g and forging his own voice harmonically opening jazz guitar dramatically . A Dedicatist- Colorist- Lap pianist. Thank you Lenny!
Lenny's wife strangled him and left him in the pool, he recorded this in1961 when he was 20, which is quite remarkable.

Lenny Breau is and will always remain the bar for which to reach. As for a comparison to Atkins...Let ' s just say that Chet knew what was playing before him and seized the opportunity to record and publish it for our enjoyment and for the musician...e d i f i c a t i o n . How can two masters of their respective genre' be truly compared?
that su.cks that someone killed him...I just heard of him today...I will seek his music out....no wonder I believe in guns in my home.
I heard Lenny many times in the mid 70s in Nashville. Most of the time for the princely sum of $1. Well worth it. He was really incredible. Saw him play twice at the Exit Inn. Once with Larry Coryell and once with Pat Martino. Good stuff!
comparing Lenny and Chet isn't even relevant. Lenny's sound is completely unique (like Adkins, his sense of time makes his interpretati o n s his own, and he owes more to Kenny Burrell than Charlie Christian(Ad k i n s ) .
A very under appreciated improvisor.
I heard from my neighbor, that he died Aug.12, 1984, and was killed by an intruder, this wasn't mentioned in biography,
Very nice mellow acoustic jazz guitar. Very nice relaxing music.
I love Lenny Breau - but I still can't categorize him either - he is in a category all his own
not as good as Chet Atkins.
