Perhaps a song for the missing garden gnome that has lost his way. Maybe kidnapped or taken hostage and held up for ransom. Or perhaps left a bad situation, only to find another. Sometimes deals with devils don't ever really get anywhere at all. Be it a wrong turn on the Highway to Hell searching for the Stairway to Heaven. One can't stay in the Garden for all of eternity.
This combines two of my issues with Led Zeppelin. One, their songs are too long. Two, live performances are generally much longer than the album versions. This is both, and therefore is way too long.
No disrespect to the song, or to Led Zeppelin, but this song seems like it's talking about suicide... Rather eerie. Because, a "Stairway to Heaven" sounds like something that would directly bring you to Heaven. Though, I think you don't have a good chance at Heaven if you commit suicide...
I agree with anthonyclassic001. This version and the BBC version are far and away the best. Although overplayed, this song's excellence can't be denied.
