Alfred Schnittke (1934-1998) was a major Soviet composer of the late twentieth century. His early music was influenced first by Shostakovich, then by serialism, but by the late '60s he had developed polystylism, which incorporated and juxtaposed music of diverse idioms, modern and historical, as well as a variety of popular and folk traditions. In the 1980s, when his work became known in the West, he was recognized as one of the most significant composers of his generation. In spite of chronic ill health, he prolifically wrote in virtually every genre, including symphonies, chamber and choral music, ballets, opera, and film scores. ~ Stephen Eddins, Rovi
