Krishna Das

The spirituality of India is blended with modern, electronic influences by Long Island, New York-raised Krishna Das (b. Jeffrey Kagel). The founder of Triloka Records, Das continues to update the musical accompaniment to traditional Hindu chanting and satsong. Influential spiritual leader Ram Dass described Das as "an example of someone whose heartsongs open the channels to God". Das' connections to Indian spirituality developed in his early 20s. Having grown up on jazz, blues and rock and roll, Das was working as a school bus driver when friends inspired him to visit Ram Dass in 1968. Driving six hours through snow, Das arrived at his destination in New Hampshire. Although he only visited with Ram Dass for a few hours, the experience completely altered the course of his life. Two years later, Das traveled to northern India where he spent two years as a devotee of Guru Mahara-ji (Neem Karoli Baba). While in India, Das became involved with the spiritual aspects of the country's music. With his visa expiring, Das returned to the U.S. in March 1972. In 1990, Das founded Triloka Records. The label has become a leading distributor of world music recordings. His debut album, One Track Heart, released in 1996, focused on updated chants from the ancient tradition of Bhakti Yoga (Yoga of Devotion). His second album, Pilgrim Heart, released in 1998, featured a guest appearance by Sting, who sang on the tune "Mountain Hari Krishna" and played bass on "Ring Song." Das continues to conduct intensive seminars, workshops and chanting sessions, issuing Live on Earth...For a Limited Time Only in early 2000. ~ Craig Harris, Rovi

Spent a month recently at the Sivananda Yoga Ranch in the Catskill Mountain. Loved the Kirtan every morning and evening. KRISHNA DAS is very loved there. I hear he goes to the Bahamas to perform at the Sivananda center. Some day!
No comments. I'm right now in a heavenly state
Hare Krishna, Hare Hare- Krishna Das my Hini favorite
This song stirs me on a soul level...
this song confirms to me that i have made the right choice to dedicate my life to Krishna, it stirs my soul and i sing loud in ecstasy
I lift my heart to the blessings of KD's music. Shanti Shanti Shanti and thanks KD for the talent that brings my soul to it's potential.
Love this song. I listen to it when I am studying or when I want to give my spirit a musical boost. Hare Krishnaaaa!
If you like Krishna Das, he's going to be giving a concert and workshop in the Washington, DC area on March 16 & 17th. www.brightst a r e v e n t s . c o m . He's even more amazing in person with a room full of people all vibing along with him.
Very soothing indeed. Krishna is the way to go.
Spiritually rich. This vibrates for me at a cellular level connecting me universally. Calling, calling to the Lord in all forms.
anyway, Krishna was a cowboy...
That cowboy thing is exactly why I love him! And I'm guessing he'd take it as a terrific compliment - especially given that he's from Long Island. He made it to cowboy...see what the spirit can do for you! In a genre too often a tad precious, Krishna Das is as real as dirt.

Actually, for the unexposed, he kind of sounds like Richard Thompson, another unlikely cowboy...

Just spent the evening chanting in person with Krishna Das here in Austin, TX. The evening was so uplifting & heart opening that I had tears in my eyes. Such good stuff!

Much love to Krishna Das who represents his energy positively no doubt but the cowboy dudes comment as far as his voice compared to other underappreci a t e d voices given far less airtime aint that far off. Peace
I felt sorry for an ignorant comment here saying cowboy singin' Hindu songs 'round the campfire..

If the true spirutal meaning was understood and experienced, our diversity in accents or geographical region of birth wont mean anything to appreciate the effort of another soul who wants to share his/her enthusiasm and touch many other lives.

This fellow is top notch. Quite a find. He deserves much more recognition for his ephemeral tunes. They evoke a sense of peace that only angels can speak to; we are all better for being a part of his epic songs.

Be still my heart! Truly inspiring - brings me to tears and opens my heart like no other music. I love KD's music & kirtans.
Amazing heart in faith and concert
marlind
Have been present when he gives his heart in concert - Phenomenal ! Grace !
Sounds like a cowboy singin' Hindu songs 'round the campfire.... Hell ya! Ride 'em cowboy... LOL...! Having lived in India for a few years and heard "the real deal" on a regular basis, the only American I've ever heard that does justice to the "mantra singing" genre is Snatam Kaur... Now THAT'S a great voice! I'll pass on this bozo...Mr. Das. Check out Manish Vyas for authentic Indian spiritual music. Oorja music is a label from India that also does authentic Hindu chanting (Sufi too).

AM I THE ONLY ONE? KRISHNA DAS SOUNDS SO MUCH LIKE EDDIE VEDDER FROM PEARL JAM! THAT IS HOW I FELL IN LOVE WITH KRISHNA DAS' VOICE WHEN I HEARD HIM PLAYED IN YOGA CLASS.

I've sang kirtan with Krishna Das twice now, and each time was brought to tears. Even listening to his music just via CD or Pandora, it sends shivers up my spine. It's like it taps into something deep in your heart and cracks you open... Hari Om ~ Jai Hanuman ~ Thank you Krishna Das
I really with more of these "new age" artists would learn something from Krisha Das. There's a perfectly beautiful simplicity to his music. Even when there's a lot of extra instrumentat i o n going on, the chant is still central. Too many others tend to pack the sounds on, drowning out the best part of it all, chanting along!
Listening to Krishna Das fills me with a sense of devotion and unalloyed happiness.
Krishna Das music makes me happy to sing along I listen to it every day it makes doing everyday chores not so much chores but a happy time filled with bliss, I can feel down and all I have to do is put on his music and echo the chants and I instantly feel better. Thank you for having his music on this site It is truly a blessing.Nam a s t e
