Finnish folk-metal ensemble Korpiklaani (Forest Clan) formed in 2002 after the members of Shaman decided to update both their sound and name. Taking cues from both the Scandinavian metal scene and the burgeoning progressive folk movement, vocalist/guitarist Jonne Järvelä, violinist Jaakko Lemmetty, drummer Matti "Matson" Johansson, bass player Arto Tissari, guitarist Toni Honkanen, and percussionist Ali Määttä released their debut, Spirit of the Forest, on Napalm Records in 2003. The group gained a new member, accordion player Juho Kauppinen, in 2004, but lost Määttä, Honkanen, and Tissari after 2005's Voice of Wilderness. Guitar player Kalle "Cane" Savijärvi and new bassist Jarkko Aaltonen added to the cacophony for 2006's Tales Along This Road, another fine collection of whiplash folk and folk-inspired hedonism that rocks harder than most conventional metal acts. The similarly themed Tervaskanto arrived in 2007, followed by Korven Kuningas in 2008. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi
@Liu Zucha Well said! :3 I tend to like songs sung in foreign languages better, because you can pick up on the language, especially if you are trying to learn it.
Pretty bummed that Juho, the accordion player, is leaving the band. Hopefully the future albums don't suffer too much, cause that accordion really gave life to most of Korpiklaani's best songs. :(
@russell: why does it have to be in English? If you like it then who cares. This is a badass band. It's better that most of their stuff isn't in English.
Just...wow. Korpiklaani effortlessly melds the cohesiveness and complexity of Jethro Tull or Molly Hatchet with the old Finnish tradition of joiking and a healthy dose of exuberant metal-infused polka. If that's not enough of a reason to listen to them, Jonne Järvelä has perhaps the sexiest voice in history. Long live Korpiklaani! Long live folk metal!
I managed to talk my boyfriend into taking me to see them at DNA Lounge back in Sept as a late birthday present. So awesome. Loved it.

To the people who left the disparaging comments about Christians, I would simply like to say that not only am I a Christ-follower, but I love celtic and folk metal. There is much symbolism and truth to be found in mythology and those 'pagan' elements which are so often the theme of these bands. Cool stuff! There is some extreme talent and creativity among these bands, especially Eluveitie! Finally, please do not talk so freely about rape. It is real and not cool to joke about. Spare us.
man why are there no american bands like this! my iPod basic consist of them eluveitie ale storm sidakra ect.. and they are all in europe i was just noticing.
The One and Only: Dude with the Face said: "And what exactly is the difference between the band positions "drummer" (Matti "Matson" Johansson) and "percussionist" (Ali Määttä)?"
A percussionist plays anything percussive. A drummer is a percussionist specializing in drums. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percussion_instrument#Names_for_percussionists
There's a lot of finnish, celtic style folk bands out there, but this band seems to have deep roots of true folk. Not that I would know, but as compared with say Ensiferum, they are less mainstreamish. I happen to like Ensiferum better, but these guys stomp for sure. I'll keep listening!
It's not that I hate Korpiklaani. I like them. But, does Pandora really need to play them 50% of the time on my Suidakra station? I mean, seriously? I never even hear Suidakra anymore. :(
These dudes are a new favorite for me. I have just started exploring this genre (Euro folk/metal) and I think they are the best. The whole thing blends seamlessly, whereas other groups seem to have to try too hard to work in the folk part until it sounds pasted together. And yes, American pop does suck. Don't look to American Idol or MTV for good music! Plum the depths here on Pandora, or look to Nashville for a better representation of what Americans are. And MarcLane, please double that
