In August of 1976, the self-titled debut album by an unknown group called Klaatu was released on Capitol Records to little notice. The following February Steve Smith, a writer for the Providence Journal in Rhode Island, wrote an article titled "Could Klaatu Be the Beatles? Mystery Is a Magical Mystery Tour." The article began the rumor that Klaatu was "more than likely either in part or in whole the Beatles." These conjectures, fueled by a series of articles in trade magazines like Billboard created a huge amount of hype and Capitol did nothing to deny or confirm the rumors. Throughout 1977, record sales soared and radio stations ran "Is Klaatu the Beatles?" promotions. Reportedly, some of the "clues" as to whether or not Klaatu were the Beatles included backward messages, Morse code, references to the group's identities in the song lyrics, and the word "Beatles" hidden in various places on the record jacket. After several months of conjecture, the group's identity was revealed at the end of year -- it wasn't the Beatles after all, it was Terry Draper (songwriter, vocalist, drummer), John Woloschuck, and Dee Long. Immediately, their record sales declined, and due to a backlash generated by the Beatles hoax their four subsequent albums failed to sell. The group broke up in 1981. ~ Jim Powers, Rovi
I really thought there may have been something to it. Klaatu were shrouded in secret and they did have the Beatles way......and I wanted the Beatles back so bad. No matter the outcome I still like Klaatue and although they were gifted studio musicians and payed the price...their music had a lot of merit....Of Interplanetary Craft........Calling
Been a ravenous Klaatu fan since their first album. Too bad music politics screwed them over. Several years ago I called Capitol Records to ask why they hadn't released Magental Lane on CD and they actually claimed they never had a group called Klaatu. Sell Out, Sell Out is actually about these dicks in Hollywood where I unfortunately work.
I saw them Live in Montreal Canada, It was at a huge theater. They reproduced well although some of the music was dubbed. The singers voice sounds a tad like McCartney, but the creativity, songs with sound effect about fantasy and Scifi imitates (not as well of course) Sgt Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour songs.
One of their best albums is not here, HOPE. Very Post-Beatlesque

Klaatu music is an acquired taste, and a sweet one for me. I began listening to this band back in the 70's, when my brother studied at Wesleyan in Middletown Conn, and he and his roomates discovered the album, LP at that time of course. I've since purchased as much as I can on CD's or on I'Tunes. Easy listening, and funky at times, great stuff ....

Listen to Silly Boys backwards you will be amazed!!!! It's on the Sir Army Suit album. I don't know how they did it but it's fantastic. If you have the vinyl LP and a backwards turntable you will be treated to something amazing.
Oh do I remember this rumor. I loved the song and bought the 'album' Still have it I think. Too bad the rumor/hoax killed the band. Nice breezy pop/rock.
Klaatu is one of those groups that the potential was never recognized. No they didn’t sound like the Beatles, but a few of the songs were in the same vein, that is what threw some of the musical commentators off. I have all of their music either on CD or album.

They sounds nothing at all like he Beatles in any way shape or form. Whoever bought into the hype/hoax was going out of their way to buy in!
I am so amazed that Pandors has Klaatu. For years I have been in love with this band and even bing in a band I have never met anyone that knows of them. I think they were musical genuis'. It is such a shame that people couldn't see past the Beatles rumor to really appreciate them. They should have been much more succesful then than they were.

In high school a bunch of us took a science fiction class. Some of the guys made a music video to "Anus of Uranus" using an old 8mm movie camera that was loaded with really old film. The result was some really distorted colors and goofy video speed changes to sync with the music. By today's standards, it would be declared a wonderfully creative piece of art. This was before camcorders and MTV... Beside, the lyrics were absolutely cool!!! Here's to you, guys.
I listened to them when I was in highschool. I have the LPs except Magenta lane, never realy liked it.

Should have left " Calling Occupants..." like it was! The original was much better!

Loved their funkier beats, "Sell Out, Sell Out," and "Set the World on Fire"

For the most part I really like Klaatu. Right now Dear Christine is playing. Great song.

Sorry to see that most of Pandora's bio is about the silly Beatles thing, which Klaatu did nothing to start or perpetuate. Aside from that, this is an interesting and creative band from Canada which is at worst a parody of late '70s prog rock and at best a surprisingly British sounding group of North Americans. I actually love Hope, and recently replaced all my Klaatu vinyl with CDs, which can be had very cheaply.
I have all Klaatu's albums and actually think that "Hope" was their best. I never bought the Beatles rumor. The critic who said "Hope" was a sophmore slump obviously knows nothing about music and doesn't care for their music from his uneducated comments.
I'm a little surprised the Beatles thing got bought, there is more than a little similarity in the vocal melodies, but honestly I don't think Ringo was this good at drums or Paul could ever play something this consistently heavy.
Terrific artist. Doctor Marvelo is a great song BTW!
