The Kingsmen (Gospel)

Not much is known about the early days of the King's Men quintet, an old-time Southern gospel act who are not to be confused with the Portland, OR-based garage band the Kingsmen (the band whose enduring "Louie, Louie" survives today as one of the all-time frat rock classics).

The King's Men were founded as a quartet by Big Jim Hamill in 1955 and based in Ashland, NC. Two other members, Theodore J. Twiggs and Eugene R. Smith, were listed as songwriters on what turned out to be their only record of the day, "Don't Say You're Sorry," released in March 1957 to little fanfare. Shortly after this single, two of the five members were drafted into the Armed Services.

A few years later, the King's Men were together again and back in action and managed a career that eventually spanned three decades ('50s, '60s, and '70s). Recordings continued to flow, mostly gospel favorites, but the King's Men's real strength seemed to lie in their performances; they are best remembered for booming tenors and resounding baritones propelling a genuine gospel prowess. The group continued into the '70s, with new members replacing retiring King's Men along the way. ~ Bryan Thomas, Rovi

There is also a fantastic a cappella ensemble called The King's Men at Biola University Conservatory of Music.
Also noticed a lot of inaccuracies about the Kingsmen here. Kingsmen still gojng strong under leadership of Ray Dean Reese!
Great gospel music!!

Please note the accuracy of the original members of the Kingsmen Quartet. My dad is Raymond McKinney (baritone) and he still lives in Asheville, NC. *Ramona McKinney Shuford*
They are actually out of Chandler, N.C.... Outside of ASHVILLE.. not Ashland... Geez! This bio is full of inaccuracies .
Jim hamil DID NOTstart the Kingsmen. Eldredge Fox did. Hamil was the best front man they've ever had.

Please find Tim Petersen who sang with the Kingsmen
Amen I am telling ya woooooo hahahaha wooooo keep singing that good ole Southern Gospel Praise God
I'm so glad that the Kingsmen have got back to having the same sound of yesteryear. They are back to one of the best southern gospel groups around. Of course I'm glad that a lot of S.G.G. (such as Gold City, the Kingdom Heirs, the Perrys, Triumphant Quartet, the new Blackwood Brothers and many, many more) are getting back to the Convention style of gospel music. You just can't beat good four part harmony.
thekyng8
Southern Gospel Music is the best MUSIC ever, the four part harmonies
I have been a huge fan of all the quartets. there all unique in their own way. Don't know about today's music, but I can always go back to good ole Southern Gospel Quartets.

Love this group! Did they sing The Apple Tree years ago?

isblstw2
no, I don't actually remember what the camp name was

I am so excited, these singers are the same singers that played at the Christian co-ed camp, I think it was camp Hiawatha ! does anyone have an e-mail or facebook page for them so I could tell them they
were the highlight of my camp experience besides rededicating my life to Christ!
I have followed the Kingsmen for many years. They have had 11-12 #1 hits on the Gospel Charts. One hit, Excuses was #1 for over a year. No one, I mean, NO ONE gave a better concert than the Kingsmen. Jim Hamill joined the group early and was a major factor in their success. They had a host of stars were with the group throughout the years. Most notable were tenors John Parrack, Ernie Phillips, and Gary Sheppard. Barritones were Squire Parsons, Parker Jonathan. Bass war and is Ray Reese

George Younce sang with many groups the last of with was The Cathedrals, not the Kingsmen, the main men of the Kingsmen were Eldridge Fox, Jim Hamil and bass Ray Reese,
I had a wonderful experence seeing the Kingsmen in person, they were a wonderful group and my favorite was George Younce He is missed.

Just a request to Pandora. Please add the Kingsmen song called "The Judgement" to your playlist. Thanks
essiejones75
I certainly do enjoy listening to the ingsmen.
I remember The Kingsmen when they came to our small church in the early 70's and all most caused the walls to fall in around us, we clapped so hard. The Spirit of God was in attendence and His Spirit could really be felt, to this day I still feel His Spirit strongly when I listen to them.

This quartet was formed by Eldredge Fox of Asheville N.C. in 1954 and went public in 1955 according to my memory of 73 years. I knew Eldredge from childhood and went to school with him. At Sand Hill High School which all of the members were enrolled, the original members were, Fank Cutshall,Ned Kirby,Charle s Stoll,Raymon d & Reese McKinney and a name that will not come to me at this time. I can't remember which of this group was active when they went public except Frank Cutshall which was a very
I had the pleasure of knowing a couple of the Kings Men and wore out one of their 8 track tapes. I love their style of Gospel music. God Bless them all.

My kind of music. I could listen by the hour.
Kingsmen are the best southern gospel quartet i know of !!
The Bio is all wrong on this group "Not The Group that made "Louie, Louie" & might i add not jim hamill that formed the kingsmen but eldridge fox.
soing
This is one of my favorite groups!!!!!
I don't believe Jim Hamill started this group. He sang lead with them howver Eldridge Fox started this goupe originally.. . . . . . . . . . . . . .

ARE YOU FAMILIAR WITH ERNIE HAASE AND SIGNATURE SOUND? ERNIE WAS THE TENOR OF THE CATHEDRALS FOR 10 YEARS. HIS QUARTET, SIGNATURE SOUND, HAS
MASTERED THE SOUND AND POSSIBLY SURPASSED THE EXCELLENCE OF THE CATHEDRALS.
zidacowoman
THIS IS AN AWESOME GROUP. LOVE THE SOUND AND HAPPY BEAT!
There is just so much to be said about an all male quartet, however the Happy Goodman,s can,t be beaat either.
godsheartmin i s t r i e s
Kingsmen were founded by Eldridge Fox around 1955, not by Big Jim Hamill... Hamill came with group much later. Kingsmen were a quartet, of at least 4 singers and a piano player ...much of the time the later group consisted of between five and eight , each having a unique function in the group...
I'D LOVE TO FINd some older tunes from the 80's

The Kingsmen in the 80's & 90's to Southern Gospel was equal to Elvis in the 60's & 70's to Rock 'n Roll. To say they did not introduce original songs is an understateme n t . They may not have authored the writings, but brought to the stage new material from Authors that became Gospel favorites to many because of The Kingsmen - Give them their due.
not to be too picky but you call the Kings Men a quintet in the first line of the first paragraph and then you call them a quartet in the first line of the second paragraph. But by the last line of that same paragraph, you write about 2 of the 5 members. Hoe many were really in the group?

And look at the album covers you display. The name is Kingsmen not King's Men.
renee036
Love that old time gospel music. There's nothing like it!

The King's Men Quintet talked about in your biography are in no way related to the Kingsmen quartet gospel group. The Kingsmen disbanded for a short time, but have reorganized and are going strong to this day.
The good old Gospel songs, that you never get tired of just sitting back and let the word of God take over.
they are very good gospel singers. i love the all time singers

The Kingsmen will always be one of my favorite Southern Gospel groups. By the way, the bio is incorrect... t h e y are based in Asheville, NC not Ashland.
I used to be very involved with southern Gospel music, our family would travel long distances to see groups play in chuches and auditoriums. The bio for the Kingsmen (Gospel),alt h o u g h small and light with facts and info, is right on. There is absolutely nothing more entertaining than a live concert with them. We saw them with the Cathedrals, Florida Boys, and the Blackwoods at one time - AMAZING - (sidenote) Check out the song Wish You Were Here (approx.1993 ) a w e s o m e feat. vocals by Tim Surrett.
