Often perceived as the eccentric, attention-seeking member of the CCM trio DC Talk, Kevin Max grew up outside of Grand Rapids, MI. Formerly known as Kevin Smith, music played a vital part in his formative years. Max started singing at the age of four and remembers "being carted around to schools, churches, and radio programs." He attended college at Virginia's Liberty University, where he met fellow DC Talk members Toby McKeehan and Michael Tait. The three formed the band in 1987, merging the styles of rock, pop, and rap to create their unique sound. After the trio moved to Nashville, TN, they released their self-titled album in 1989. The release was followed by Nu Thang in 1990, Free at Last in 1992, and Jesus Freak in 1995. In 1997, Max married his wife, Alayna, and soon after saw his first book of poetry, At the Foot of Heaven, published. In addition to adding marriage and writing to his plate, Max changed his name from Smith and met his biological parents for the first time. Of the experience, Max stated in a CCM interview, "I personally feel like it was the best thing for me to do because I've always wondered about my roots." In 1998, DC Talk signed with Virgin Records and released Supernatural. A year later, in the summer of 1999, Max told fellow bandmembers he was leaving the group. However, after much thought, prayer, and discussion, he decided to remain with the trio. DC Talk's EP, Solo, was released in 2001, previewing tracks from Max, McKeehan, and Tait's solo projects. Max's project, entitled Stereotype B, was released in August 2001. His second book of poetry was also published in 2001. ~ Ashleigh Kittle, Rovi
It IS true! Newsboys was doing a concert at my parent's church. My dad stood and talked to Kevin for a good 30-40 minutes (No, he did NOT get me an autograph) Kevin does background vocals for 2 songs on the Newsboys' new album God's not Dead and it was announced that he IS the new lead for Audio Adrenaline. He sang Big House with them and brought the house down. SO EXCITED!!!
Without a doubt the greatest voice in music yesterday, today and probably forever.

One of the best, and smartest, vocalists alive today. One of the most underrated vocalists alive today as well. I gotta have more MAX! :)

I dunno what it is about his voice but I just love it, dc talk is probably my all time favorite band, their music, along with God, got me through some rough times!!!
Your My favorite DcTalk guy. I love your song that you and the other guys made
its this one "I wish we've all been ready " you should sing that one again.
He has a great voice, a blend of Bono, Jon Foreman, and Chris Martin with a lil bit of an international flair. He doesn't get the hype he deserves as one of the great CCM vocalists. Definitely the most talented member of dc Talk
I think his music is a bit of an acquired taste compared to Toby and Michael's solo efforts--but that being said, I can't think of very many other musicians like him, particularly in Christian music. In a genre that's sometimes bogged down with bands trying to sound like whatever's popular at the moment, Kevin Max certainly stands out from the crowd.

I love his voice and I agree with that ego stuff.I liked him better in dcTalk
I never noticed his ego, but I love his music. Never heard anything like it. Well, I take that back, his voice reminds me of traditional Indian music.

An undeniable talent, but the tug of war between his ego and his humility (are they two different things, really?) make him somewhat difficult to stomach. The fact that Toby has fared SO much better professionally should be the wake up call.
