A pop and standards singer during his long career, Kenny Rankin debuted in 1967 with his first album, Mind Dusters, which featured the soft rock hit "Peaceful." Over the course of the early '70s, Rankin slowly built up a following with a steady stream of records and performances that balanced originals, new songs, and standards. As the decade drew to a close, he began to return to his singer/songwriter roots, particularly on After the Roses, his 1980 debut for Atlantic Records. He continued to perform during the '80s, but he only recorded sporadically. In 1991, he recorded a pair of albums, Hiding in Myself and Because of You, for two separate labels. Three years later, he signed with Private Music and released Professional Dreamer, an album that found him concentrating on standards. That record was followed in 1997 by Here in My Heart, which had a Brazilian flavor. Throughout the rest of the '90s, Rankin focused on touring and, in 1999, he issued The Bottom Line Encore Collection, his first live recording in two decades. ~ Scott Yanow & Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
Kenny was a dear friend to me. Nobody has ever sang any song like Kenny can. Ever!

Beyond underrated... the most amazing voice... could never understand why he was not all over the radio... his voice and style were incredible... unbelieable gift and talent... his voice always gives me goosebumps... Adele has a similar gift in the way she uses her instrument.... My wedding song was What Matters Most.... the marriage didn't make it but his music is something so special .... i want everyone to here him
Kenny Rankin is dead? who knew?????????????????????? One of my favorite ever......saw him in DC way back in the early 80's...he was not a very nice person....in person....HUGE EGO......could see why he never made it big time main stream....just not ready to play the fame game...i didn't understand his anger then....at the audience.....any of us liking him so much......but had no idea he passed......what a voice---talent--he didn't get how much we all loved him......sad..
I can't believe that I am just learning of KR's death! I remember listening to and falling in love with theTHE KENNY RANKIN ALBUM in my dorm room in the 70's. rRIP KENNY, I'LL LISTEN TO YOUR MUSIC FOREVER!
Shocked to hear of his death so late. I never got a chance to see him live but have a pirated tape of his concert in Tampa Bay back in the 80's. My partner. Jerome got to go with our friend Suzanne. Along with Kenny's beautiful voice I keep hearing Suzanne saying, We love you Kenny!
Yes what a loss. I just found out about his passing. So good to hear him again on Pandora here. I saw him once and I feel lucky for at least that. I will never forget the thrill of hearing that pure, clean and unique voice of his. R.I.P. Kenny.

My favorite artist above all! I was so shocked when I found out he had passed a year afterward! I cried like....it was terrible. I could not understand how I did not know? I have concluded that it may be because Michael Jackson passed away around the same time? All press and attention consumed. I miss him. I play all his music all the time. I too, discovered him as a teenager in Hawaii. RIP Kenny

Kenny Rankin's unique vocal quality made every song he did a memorable experience. Every time I saw him it was like seeing him the first time.
I once went to see George Carlin because Kenny was his opening act. Haven't we met is my favorite and blackbird. i did knw he has passed away. His voice has a very relaxing quality that makes you smile....
Kenny had this blues rift he was working on, i would sit in the livingroom while he played around with it and we would add lyrics to it, and just laugh. He would call it Lizzie's Blues.

I am in shock that I am just finding out TODAY in 2012 that Kenny Rankin passed away. I have followed him since the 60's and Mind Dusters. I am so glad I was able to hear him perform shortly before he passed. He was still as amazing as he was in his youth. And what a wonderful sense of humor he had! His performance was in a small intimate local theatre. I cannot believe that Kenny's passing was not reported very well. I listen to enough news, radio, TV to have heard if he his death was given due
Kenny Rankin never to the recognition he deserved. A truly great singer. I saw him live many times in intimate venues, so got a chance to speak to him after the concerts. Told him I listened to his songs while driving in NYC traffic + he calmed me down. Still love his voice. Thanks for the hours of joy I have listening to you. Many kisses Kenny xox.
My all-time favorite is his version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps. There's just something about his style that is so unique, so captivating, and his voice just keeps you spellbound.
Everytime his tunes come on the radio, I stop & listen. His voice is so captivating. He came to my town but I thought I'll see him next time around. He died a few months later & now there is no next time. I'm so sad I missed him. My lesson to pass on is; Don't wait to see & enjoy your favorite artists at every opportunity. Love & Peace & Grace to All.
No! Really?? :( I am so sad he is gone. I saw him twice at Club Bene NJ and he even signed my Silver Morning album for me. What a great singer he was. RIP Kenny! :((

I saw him about 30 days before he died. It was in a large high school auditorium in Cincinnati. Had not seen him since the early 70's. His voice was just as sweet and fine as ever. He gave no indication that he was ill. My wife, who did not know a lot about him, was knocked out by his voice and performance.
My all time favorite male singer. Kenny could take a classic that you've heard a million times and make it the first time you've ever heard it. Brilliant! Paul McCartney admitted that if Kenny had recorded Blackbird first, the Beatles would not have had a hit.A singer's singer! I miss him!
Having followed his career since the mid 70's I always dreamed of seeing him perform live. Life happened and another 25 years went by when I learned of him appearing at an outdoor concert in Seattle. About half way into his show he began playing the intro to 'Blackbird', when almost on que a large flock of black birds flew directly overhead...and the crowd began to cheer the birds. The consumate performer Kenny looked up at said softly in his deep voice, what did you expect,it's their song.

I found Kenny Rankin on Carson's show back in the 70's. I was only 17, had just lost my first love to another person, and Kenny's music gave me some beauty in my life at that time. I ended up marrying my first love after all and followed Kenny Rankin until his death. I miss you Kenny. Rest in Peace my friend.
Kenny's songs can leave you happy or sad. He was a fantastic and under-appreciated artist. I don't know of another artist today that can compare with him. RIP, Kenny!
My all time favorite Rankin tune might be "Silver Morning" Hauntingly beautiful...which is a good description of his voice. Definately passed before his time; but he made some great music during the time he had...
I was emotionally crushed a few months ago when I found out that he had passed away. Many memories of his beautiful voice. In the 70's 80's and 90's I would spend a few days at Big Sur and the most enjoyable time I would have was just to listen to his voice (on 8 track and then cassette and CD's.) His voice will never be replaced. Kenny loved your music and still do. You brought peace to so many hearts and souls. R.I.P. and God bless you forever. Thank you for sharing your gift with us.

Just love him - everything he's ever done. I miss his live performances and knowing we'll never hear him create that unique sound again.
There was never a sweeter voice than Kenny's!! Listening to him after work lowered my blood pressure!!! I miss him more than he will ever know. God Bless You Kenny.
Such a wonderful voice. His style can never be duplicated, he's one of a kind.

I guess I don't look like a singer, but all I've ever really wanted to do is sing. I've had some great opportunities to sing and loved them all. Throughout the years to the current date the singer I admired most was Kenny Rankin. I loved his voice and his independent spirit. You left a great legacy.
