Kathleen Edwards

A fixture on the Americana landscape, Kathleen Edwards was born in Ottawa, Canada, the daughter of foreign service parents who played piano and guitar in their spare time. At five, Edwards began to study classical violin, which continued through her early teens. At that point, the Edwards family moved overseas. Removed from the influence of mainstream North American pop music, Edwards delved into her older brother's collection of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and early Tom Petty records. After high school, she landed back in Ottawa, where she sang and played her guitar in local clubs while networking with other musicians in the scene.

In 1999 Edwards recorded her debut EP, Building 55, and toured throughout Canada to support it, busking and opening for acts like Hayden and Jane Siberry along the way. A bad breakup led to more songwriting, much of which took place after Edwards moved out of Ottawa and into rural Quebec. Those songs became the basis of Failer, her debut full-length, which she recorded in Ottawa in late 2001. The album was a heartfelt mixture of folk and country, and drew upon influences like Whiskeytown and Gillian Welch. A major critical buzz began to swirl around her music, and gigs at the 2002 South by Southwest festival -- as well as an opening slot for Richard Buckner -- led to a deal with Zoe/Rounder, which released Failer in January 2003. The album garnered rave reviews, and Edwards toured extensively in support, headlining her own club dates and playing arenas in support of Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones.

In 2004 she headed back into the studio to record her second album, with guitarist and bandleader Colin Cripps serving as producer. The final product was Back to Me, which arrived in stores during the spring of 2005 and introduced some pop elements into Edwards' dusty Americana. It was followed in 2008 by Asking for Flowers. It would be four years before her next album, Voyageur, which chronicled a love affair from beginning to end, appeared in 2012. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi

I hope Quitters Cafe makes you a boatload of cash Kathleen. I also hope that the work inspires you and you break your writers block.
I love Back to Me ; a driving beat and great lyrics. This is the first time I've heard her. Fabulous.
Love.

.
She's the sweet smell of a deep green forest I walked through this year
She is as good as it gets.
I first heard Kathleen on Mountain Stage about nine years ago -- I've been hooked ever since. She is a great talent.
Gotta love an artist that puts a map of the Great Lakes on an album cover. ;)

a peaceful...y e t somewhat haunting voice...love l y ! ~
Saw her this fall, and she did not disappoint! SHe was part of a great double-bill with Alejandro Escovedo. What a great show. Her new album should be coming soon, yes?
Kathleen is the bomb. Very funny and trucker-mout h e d in person. Looking forward to her next album and a tour.
Love, love, love Kathleen. Can't say that enough. I am ready for a new CD.

all I can say is . . . KATHLEEN ROCKS! Love her music, vocals and lyrics. I've seen her 5 or 6 times, she never disappoints.
Saw her live in Austin Texas last year with her new husband who is playing guitar and singing backup. Outstanding! She has obviously had a struggle in life so far. She is considering moving to Austin. She likes the music scene there.
Kathleen has such a mournful voice. Her lyrics get to me. Does her life get better? God I hope so. She epitomizes the struggles of my 30s. I only hope she gets the critical acclaim she deserves. She comforts me in times of trouble and lifts me up when I am happy.
you know, i too used patty griffin and kathleen to form a station. the teo of them are the only music i havwe found in years that i know will stay with me in the same way as, say joni mitchell, bonnie raitt, tracy chapman. artists just seem to come and go and i only find a keeper maybe once a year. which may be partly because i dont spend that much time searching. i found kathleen on a starbucks compilation.
Asking for flowers sounds a lot better than failer...at least the title! Heartfelt, good lyrics and tunes. What more do you want? Hopefully Kathleen's personal life has progressed as positively as the album titles. Only the best of wishes (flowers). Honestly don't know how she's on Mary Black's station, but appreciate all the aforemention e d qualities. Blessings, despite it all.
Can't say enough good things about Kathleen Edwards..she can make the dough and get the glory!!
Finally picked up "Asking For Flowers." Bravo.

As great as the albums are, she is even better live. I just saw her for a second time and am planning for the the third. She can make her vintage Gibson's growl. It is like they are alive. In a perfect world she (and other singer/songw r i t e r s that can actually play a guitar) would be the superstars and the half-as-tale n t e d , overpackaged , over exposed, pop tartlets would struggle. But then I guess we wouldn't have an accessible Kathleen touring in intimate little rooms like she does now.
The new album is terrific. The title track (Asking for Flowers), The Cheapest Key, and I Make the Dough, You Get the Glory are my faves. The video for I Make the Dough is very funny; it's on YouTube.
She is a truly gifted songwriter. "Copied Keys" off Back to Me is my favorite track. But I haven't heard anything off her new album yet...Damn is she solid! Her songs are so clean and pure. Keep it up Kathleen, and get back to Northampton soon!

Kathleen is amazing!! I saw her last night in Burlington Vt., and she sounds and looks even better in person. If you haven't seen a show, you're missing out. She takes the time to talk to everyone afterward, and she relates to and cracks up with the crowd throughout the whole show. Amazing girl and full of energy!
Just heard her today. I might have to... aquire more from her.
I really like the music of Katie Edwards. I first heard her on Pandora this afternoon. Great lyrics and arrangements .
