Karnivool started out as a high school band in 1997, playing parties around Perth focusing on covers of Nirvana and Carcass with a handful of original songs thrown into the mix. After a year of this, singer Ian Kenny decided to change the focus to purely original material, getting rid of the original bandmembers -- who had been called "a bunch of clowns" around Perth, hence the name Karnivool -- and recruiting guitarists Drew Goddard and Mark Hosking, bass player Jon Stockman, and drummer Ray Hawking to work on a self-titled EP. This was followed by the full-length albums Persona in 2001 and Themata in 2005. Lead guitarist Drew Goddard played most of the drums on Themata and also began contributing his own songs, which were written in an unusual combination of dropped-B and standard E tuning. This became their trademark as the band moved away from their early nu-metal sound towards a more progressive style heavily influenced by Tool. New drummer Steve Judd was brought in for their live shows and then became a permanent member of the band. American label Bieler Bros. Records gave Themata a U.S. release in 2007. In 2009, Karnivool released Sound Awake, which debuted at number two in the ARIA album charts and was a top-seller in Australia's independent chart. ~ Jody Macgregor, Rovi
I had a friend open for these guys when they came to illinois and I missed it. Kickin myself now for it. I heard they sound just as good live as they do on their albums

heavily influenced in my music writing because of this band
If you guys like this band, you may like Nothing More. They're on tour with them right now. AWESOME band... especially live. They're not on Pandora, but they do have Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, Purevolume, etc...

Best band ever. These guys blow Tool out of the water. Can't wait to see them in concert again and hang with Drew again hopefully.
Sound Awake is an awesome album. Quite possibly the best album i have heard in years from any artist. Themata is a great album but Sound Awake blows it away. Also a shame to see that "Birds of Tokyo" arent featured on Pandora (Karnivool singer Ian Kenny sings in both bands). 2 of the best Aussie bands going around
Why, Australia, why are yo keeping such an awesome album like Sound Awake awake away from us for another full year?! If you can, find some way to here it, it may be even better than Themata. Reccomended songs: Deadman, Change Pt. 2, Umbra, and Goliath.

Karnivool might be the best band I have heard through Pandora.
These awestastic dudemans and Gotye are the only reason for any remote hope for good music in Australia. I swear there's some musical curse down there.
absolutely one of the best, and what i consider to be the most revolutionary sound, since the deftones. in fact i think they sound like, or very similar to the deftones, but that's better than every band trying to sound like f-in nickelback. at least these guys only sound similar to at most 2 or 3 bands. their sound is very unique. my fav song is C.O.T.E. would love to see this band live.

Anyway, just got into these guys, like what I'm hearing. Themata just flat-out rocks
I love this band, one of my favorite bands.
