Jump, Little Children

Named in honor of the song by bluesmen Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, acoustic funk-popsters Jump, Little Children formed at the North Carolina School of the Arts, where founding members Jay Clifford (vocals, guitar), Ward Williams (cello) and brothers Matt (harmonica, accordion, mandolin) and Evan Bivins (drums) were originally studying classical music. Influenced by a friend from Dublin, they began playing traditional Irish folk music in their spare time, increasingly drawing influence from Delta blues as well; eventually, the group quit school to focus on performing full-time, even gigging in Ireland in 1992 before returning to the U.S. and settling in Boston. There Jump, Little Children began writing and performing original material, and in the spring of 1994 they relocated to Charleston, South Carolina, adding upright bassist Jonathan Gray and building a grass-roots following through their extensive street-corner performances and club dates. Turning increasingly towards pop, the band released their independent debut The Licorice Tea Demos in 1995; the Buzz EP followed in 1997, and soon after Jump, Little Children signed to Atlantic, issuing Magazine the following year. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

Great Band. Do not understand how they did not make it. My Guitar should have been a big hit. What happened?

My favorite band of all time. I have listened to them for many years, and I have gotten many of my friends to listen to some of their stuff. They are amazing and I wish they were still together making music. I have all of their CD's, and I went to many gigs in NC and Dock street performances .
haloquatro-I couldn't agree more, although there are a couple songs off of magazine that are pretty good, overall their best stuff is live and off of licorice tea demos.

Amazing song! Never heard of these guys, so I'm thankful this turned up on my station. Just downloaded Cathedrals on iTunes, and I look forward to checking out more of their music.
They should reform and get back to their roots. Licorice Tea and Buzz are my favorite albums. Can’t tell you how many times I have had to buy Licorice Tea Demos because I’ve lent it to friends who refuse to return it. I lived in Charleston from 1994 – 1996 and loved the Irish funky rap blues stuff on those albums as well as the tracks they performed live in the mid to late 90’s that never got recorded. Didn’t care for most of the over produced pop music they put out with Atlantic.

This group needs to come back on the scene. I'm listening to Dim And The Dark . . . awesome.
Rains in Asia is an infectiously likable song.
I LOVE THEM!!!!!!!!
MORE JAY CLIFFORD! He is still making music and PANDORA needs to acknowledge it!
When I found out about Pandora, Jump Little Children was the first "Station" I asked for. I still tell people they are my favorite band. I went on a local "tour" when I was in college (late 90's)and am still in awe of how great they are and how no one else seems to have taken notice. Listen, Listen! And I feel bad for everyone who didn't go to their live shows because they were unbelievably fun, exciting, sexy, brilliant, and just all around amazing. I think the fact that the Beatles & also D

R.I.P., Jump.
This article really needs to be updated!
Jay Clifford released a great album in 2007 called Driving Blind, but it's not on Pandora, unfortunatel y . It's nice to hear his wonderful voice again.
That is sad news, b/c I'd never heard them before Pandora'ing.

Sadly J,LC broke up a few years ago to pursue independent projects.
Aside from their obvious talent, they also have a great sense of humor and timing. Matt and Evan played a couple shows in Chicago with my friends' improv team, where they improvised the underscoring of scenes and a few full songs. It was hilarious.
Not sure if their concerts still contain the same shenanigans as they used to, but wow they have an awesome stage pressence. Any time you can see them its worth it; New Years and Halloween shows are the best.
Oh my,havent heard about this band is a long time. Booked them at a little tiny venue in SF years back, and as I recall, it was a very interesting evening. See them if you can.

Their Vertigo cd is amazing and is a wonder it wasn't a popular. In fact, it's not even on the discography here for some reason. I guess the Music Genome project isn't quite complete :)
Simply awesome...th e y sound like a hybrid of U2 and Radiohead.
