Julie London

A sultry, smoky-voiced master of understatement, Julie London enjoyed considerable popularity during the cool era of the 1950s. London never had the range of Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughan, but often used restraint, softness, and subtlety to maximum advantage. An actress as well as a singer, London played with heavyweights like Gregory Peck and Rock Hudson in various films, and was married to Jack Webb of Dragnet fame for seven years before marrying songwriter Bobby Troup ("Route 66"). London performed her biggest hit, "Cry Me a River," in the Jayne Mansfield film The Girl Can't Help It. After recording her last album, Yummy, Yummy, Yummy, in 1969, she continued to act -- playing a nurse on the NBC medical drama Emergency from 1974-1978. Despite her "sex symbol" image -- London was known for her sexy LP covers, which make them collector's items -- she was surprisingly shy, and left show biz altogether in the late '70s. In the mid-'90s London suffered a stroke, which led to a half-decade of poor health and ultimately contributed to her death on October 18, 2000. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi

If you like Julie London, then you should try to listen to Michael Franks. Not the same gender, I know but if one likes Julie, Franks has eerily similar qualities, undeniable. You should try ...

What a Sexy and Beautiful Lady.
Love her voice and style !
emergency!!! ! ! ! ! ! !
I was a radio DJ during the 50's and played her songs a lot...she will always be the epitomy of sultry...and looked good on those album covers too.
What a beautiful and talented woman she was. None of the talents today come even close. She and Doris Day are in a class of their own that will never be surpassed.
Julie London brings back memories of when my wife a I were first married 50 years ago
Back in the mid 60's I was attending a jazz festival at Cobo Hall in Detroit MI. I was returning from a break and was passing a bar inside Cobo and someone said, Julie London was up next. The bar cleared in record time.
As Bobby Troup once said, She really didn't know how good she was. I have probably all her albums and nobody - NOBODY - comes close.

I had a schoolboy crush on her after I heard Cry Me A River, and especially after I saw that gorgeous album cover!
Listening to her Julie London Sings the Blues is one of my favorite memories as a child. Have ALWAYS wanted a dress like she wore on that album cover.

Found out about her on a Christmas album and what a voice--I remembered her from Emergency, but never knew she sang.
What a great jazz singer. We are lucky to have so many of her recordings.. .
I have never seen anyone since come down the pike with that kind of combination of sexiness and pure silk voice !!! What a beauty. Miss her soo much. Many a youthful fantasy spawned by her album covers :>). I guess that dates me, doesn't it?
she had a great voice and loved her movies

I vote for K.D. Lang covering some of her songs. Their voices sound very similar.

She and Bobby lived in Newport Beach and were friends of my parents. She was one cool lady.
She was the first Non-Black woman that I loved. Her music, voice and looks mesmerized me.
Love her looks, voice and repetoire
Great voice, could be the poster child for the 50's cool vocal sound out of the west coast. I have always enjoyed her work both in jazz and in the motion pictures/TV industry..

Julie was a great singer, and very beautiful. She has always been one of my favorites.
she was before my time, but her beauty and voice were timeless.
I fell in love with Julie London when I was a teenager. When she died, I cried for the first time for a big time singer.
Julie represented everything that was great about jazz in her era. She was beautiful, had a great voice, was a very solid interpreter, and by all accounts a great lady. Man, there is a video of Julie singing 'Fly Me to the Moon' from the 60's on youtube, WOW! She was the embodiment of the term SEXY!
Love her.

One of the interesting things about her career is that she Was married to Jack Webb. After she divorced Webb she married Bobby Troup. They BOTH played in the TV series Emergency. Emergency was a Jack Webb production. Webb had a great love of jazz music and musicians. I always figured he just respected her and her talent so much he couldn't help putting her and Troup together on one of his shows.
