Joseph Schwantner (born 1943 in Chicago) is an American composer who started his career at the height of the serialist movement, but changed course to produce music of a distinctly tonal character that is rich in instrumental colors and effects. Schwantner found his personal style in the 1970s, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning Aftertones of Infinity is representative of his quasi-mystical and highly evocative expression. In 1982 Schwantner premiered his New Morning for the World, a tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr., and since then commissions from many symphony orchestras and foundations have led to a steady output of works. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi
