Modern blues in the '90s had a weird phenomenon of teenage blues guitarists rocketing to popularity with their first album. The entire trend culminated with Jonny Lang, a guitarist from Fargo, ND, who released his solo debut album, Lie to Me, when he was 15. At the age of 12, he had attended a show by the Bad Medicine Blues Band and began playing with the group. Several months later he became the leader, and the newly renamed Kid Jonny Lang & the Big Bang relocated from Fargo to Minneapolis and released their debut album, Smokin', in 1995. The LP became a regional hit, leading to a major-label bidding war and culminating in Lang's signing to A&M Records in 1996. Early in 1997, his major-label debut, Lie to Me, was released to mixed reviews; the stronger effort Wander This World followed late the next year. Lang's next release, Long Time Coming, arrived in 2003 and garnered often withering critiques for its turn toward over-produced hard rock mixed with sometimes heavy-handed religiosity; 2006's gospel-informed Turn Around was more favorably received. Live at the Ryman was issued by Concord Records in 2010. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
Saw him with Buddy Guy at the House of Blues a few months ago. Part of the show was great and then he really kind of went off the rails. Raw and primal is the only words I can use to descibe it. He wasn't even playing the song anymore, just jamming on his own. Don't know if he is on drugs or just dealing with some really heavy personal stuff but he wasn't right. At times you could of heard a pin drop and that place was packed to the gills. He seemed to come out of it towards the end of his
I thought he was awesome the first two times I saw him, however he has strayed away from what he was great at. Seems like the last 4 times I saw him he would play one blues song for every 5 nothing type songs, actually left halfway through his last concert, very disappointing.
Adore Johnny's musical mastery & the depth of his lyrics. I have seen him live twice and will many times again when I have the opportunity . I have all his cd"s &he is one of my all time favorites .
Saw John at the Gothic Theater in Denver, CO Kicked some major a** ! This guy has a future in the blues biz if he don't go off the deep end. Stay true to the blues Johnny, stay true.

Saw him in 1997; in Orlando (D0wntown Disney/Pleasure Island) shortly after my ex and I had seen his morning TV debut. We went to ALL THREE of his shows that night...loved the eclectic mix of music and the people eating it and him up! Love his Gospel message too...meant for everybody; but not expected to be accepted. ...Guessing he understood/understands such! Play and sing your heart, Jonny! That was a great trip; also discovering Shannon Curfman...shopping at Virgin Record's
Saw Jonny at the Horseshoe in Elizabeth, IN. Had heard about him but did not have any of his music. I must say he brought the house down with Lie to me. Great damn song.
I died, and glorious, the best Canadian women of 17,000 is going to mean my little iron fist or irradiated final Men and Women vision of a leader's death!
Oh, the most anti_God Pro Berkley -pro India stupid silly weirdo man or Father or Grandfather, or Great-Father who ever loved the Fater who builid the swirley white/blue planet if I closed by eyes, by sinful peter Eyes. Thank you blind soulful man.
As a peter person, I teach Jesus about Love, Honesty, and Pain, and he argues about the Love. I am the last Peter, I am sure with so many Papal, Christian Olive, Engineers Horrible Mama Boys, Fems, and John Healey and Lang, who walked 20 disagreements with Jesus, his Norma Jean philo, a Papal, or his abusive desctructive Engineer fake fake fake....LOL
My friend Casey I were lucky enough to see Johnny Lang & the Big Bang on his national debut @ the Caboze in Minneapolis on very cold Jan night the house was bouncin!!!!!!!!! if you were not grovin to the music of this exceptional young man @ 16 you must have been dead
It inspired me hearing another young kid play guitar when I first started playing guitar myself many years ago. I have been jammin' and listening to him ever since!
I first heard of Jonny back when he was about 18 because of my friends BB King and Bonnie Raitt, and I got to see him in person about when he was 22 at our small-town casino in the woods..... before they added the hotel and music venue, in recent years.... we sat on metal folding chairs out in the back parking lot of the casino on a warm summer night enjoying the most soul- stirring blues of a very young man, whilst sippin' a beverage from the beer garden crammed into a corner of the 'taped-off
