John Prine

An acclaimed singer/songwriter whose literate work flirted with everything from acoustic folk to rockabilly to straight-ahead country, John Prine was born October 10, 1946, in Maywood, IL. Raised by parents firmly rooted in their rural Kentucky background, at age 14 Prine began learning to play the guitar from his older brother while taking inspiration from his grandfather, who had played with Merle Travis. After a two-year tenure in the U.S. Army, Prine became a fixture on the Chicago folk music scene in the late '60s, befriending another young performer named Steve Goodman.

Prine's compositions caught the ear of Kris Kristofferson, who was instrumental in helping him win a recording contract. In 1971, he went to Memphis to record his eponymously titled debut album; though not a commercial success, songs like "Sam Stone," the harsh tale of a drug-addled Vietnam veteran, won critical approval. Neither 1972's Diamonds in the Rough nor 1973's Sweet Revenge fared any better on the charts, but Prine's work won great renown among his fellow performers; the Everly Brothers covered his song "Paradise," while both Bette Midler and Joan Baez offered renditions of "Hello in There."

For 1975's Common Sense, Prine turned to producer Steve Cropper, the highly influential house guitarist for the Stax label; while the album's sound shocked the folk community with its reliance on husky vocals and booming drums, it served notice that Prine was not an artist whose work could be pigeonholed, and was his only LP to reach the U.S. Top 100. Steve Goodman took over the reins for 1978's folky Bruised Orange, but on 1979's Pink Cadillac, Prine took another left turn and recorded an electric rockabilly workout produced at Sun Studios by the label's legendary founder, Sam Phillips, and his son Knox.

Following 1980's Storm Windows, Prine was dropped by Asylum Records, and he responded by forming his own label, Oh Boy Records, with the help of longtime manager Al Bunetta. The label's first release was 1984's Aimless Love, and under his own imprint Prine's music thrived, as 1986's country-flavored German Afternoons earned a Grammy nomination in the Contemporary Folk category. After 1988's John Prine Live, he released 1991's Grammy-winning The Missing Years; co-produced by Howie Epstein of Tom Petty's Heartbreakers, the album featured guest appearances from Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, and Tom Petty and proved to be Prine's biggest commercial success to date, selling nearly 250,000 copies. After making his film debut in 1992's John Mellencamp-directed Falling from Grace, Prine returned in 1995 with Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings, also produced by Epstein, which earned him another Grammy nomination.

In 1998, while Prine was working on an album of male/female country duets, he was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, with the cancer forming on the right side of his neck. Prine underwent surgery and radiation treatment for the cancer, and in 1999 was well enough to complete the album, which was released as In Spite of Ourselves and featured contributions from Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, Trisha Yearwood, Patty Loveless, Connie Smith, and more. In 2000, Prine re-recorded 15 of his best-known songs (partly to give his voice a workout following his treatment, but primarily so Oh Boy would own recordings of his earlier hits) for an album called Souvenirs, originally issued in Germany but later released in the United States. In 2005, he released Fair & Square, a collection of new songs, followed by a concert tour. Two years later, alongside singer and guitarist Mac Wiseman, Prine issued Standard Songs for Average People, a collection of the two musicians' interpretations of 14 folk and country classics. In Person & on Stage, a collection of performances from various concert tours, appeared in 2010. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

Goodness knows he's one of a select few artists that can reach the hearts and minds of the common working folks, Hank & Woody come to mind.
John's music, I don't know John personaly, is all about that galldang twist that spins reallity around inside genious, dang I wasn't gonna use the "g" word, and flavors up life for all us participants . Thanks Mr Prine.
I always feel like John Prine has been reading my mail, if you get my drift. His songs speak the truth of life and love. Not always beer and buttercups, but you can't help but grin at all of it.

His lyrics cut through the BS and make you laugh and cry.
Sweet Revenge may be the best, Fair & Square is my personal 2nd. It might because I'ved owned them and listened to them most over the years. So far I like everything else too. A master of his craft.
Listening to John since I was 16 years old in 1971. Over the years, the love has only grown stronger. Listen to John....it is human stuff.
I have loved John for years-I discovered him on KNON-the Voice of the People in Dallas, Texas. I love his biting humor and the sarcasm of his songs. They stay in your head. You get to love some of his characters, at least I do. I saw him on stage once in '86 I think. Once is never enough.
Do you know what blood looks like in black and white?... SHADOWS...SH A D O W S ! My dad turned me on to JP and I have enjoyed him for years. As a family we have seen him play a few times. A great story teller and entertainer. Hope his throat is better.
When I think of songwriters who embody the folk/roots music of the 60's and early 70's, John Prine's name is clearly one of the most prominent. He may not of had the commercial success of a James Taylor or even a Kris Kristofferso n ( m o r e like Leonard Cohen) but in many ways his music was more poignant and bold and painted a better picture of the characters and times he wrote and sang about. Try Blow Up Your TV, his take on the pop-culture of the times. He surely is one of the greats, no doubt.
Thanks Harold! For introducing me to this legend!!!
John I'm a 26 year old and just love your music. Your truly an inspiration thank you so much for the much needed actual music only wish more of my generation could see this as I do. Some people's kids....
Hey John, while most of the kids in school back in the early and mid 70's were listening to Kiss, Aerosmith and other rock and roll bands, my buddies and I were hanging with you, Bob Dylan and the like. Thanks for helping me through those difficult day's!!!! Keep the tunes coming. Not knocking Rock and Roll.
In Spite of Ourselves... J o h n is the greatest!
One of the best. i really like john and mac wiseman
stay true...
Addressing an earlier post. What's up with the grown men crying in his audience. I gotta admit I'm one of them.
saw him in concert then play AFTER AN UNKNOWN RANDY NEWMAN we booed Randy off stage to hear our John Prine the best to us back then!
loved him since 1974
In the early 80's I took my young family to a local music festival in Tilton NH The featured artist was Tom Rush, joined by John Prine and the host was an un-famous Jay Leno! A delightful performance. . . a n d Ive been a loyal fan of them all for over 40 yrs
John Prine is a songwriter's songwriter. He's so cool..

a very dear friend (Steve) of mine introduced me to John Prine 42 years ago. At the time, I was into jazz and blues. One night, he convinced me to listen to Jon Prine and I didn't like the first song. He said give it one more chance. I've been fan ever since...met him and my sons even know all the lyrics to his songs. 2 days ago, that wonderful friend that introduced me to John, passed away. He was a friend of 42 years...we used to sing hi songs together and I will always remember my good times
His work is by far the majority of song lines that come to mind in my dealings with people or life situations. Some sarcastic, some sad and some poignent reminders of life's absurdities. He feeds my head.
Had the pleasure of seeing John perform with Arlo Guthrie at Clinch Valley College in Wise, Va. in the late 1980s. Before and after, the singing mailman has kept me singing along while at the same time reminding me of the important things in life. One of a kind, that's for damn sure. There's no one even close.
John Prine is one of my true propets. I REALLY LOVE HIM AND HIS LYRICS

I saw John Prine play in a small theater in Duluth, MN in 1999 or 2000. Small intimate setting. My wife bought us tickets for my birthday. It was one of the best birthday present I received.

Back in the late seveties a bunch of us rented a big old farm house and would have these great jam sessions around the campfire, playing songs like Paradise and Please Don't Bury Me. All these years later, some around that campfier have moved on and some have passed on. But for me - IM STILL JAMMIN and still love John's music.

Just saw John Prine at Telluride. It was amazing. Grown men crying throughout the audience. Voice started off kind of growly, then smoothed out and beautiful. A great show.
I named my second son after you John. I named him Pryne! You've filled my home with serenity on even the darkest days. You've shown me that even the worst situation is merely a pebble in the big picture. And you've made me laugh through the tough times and made me realize that we all have struggles and helped me dance right thru them. Im 32 and have 5 boys. my favorite memory will always be dancing in my kitchen to your songs with one of them on my hip. you really are the best!!
Hello in There, that is.
This is the saddest freaking song I have ever heard. Been hearing it for almost 40 years, and it means more now than ever. Also check out Bette Midler's cover.
I FEEL THE SAME I COULD LISTEN TO HIM FOR HOURS MAKES YOU LAUGH AND LAUGH AND SMILE

Wouldn't you love to have about 25 friends over and have John Prine there just with his guitar. I can listen to him for hours. Saw him in Louisville a few times way back. I remember he talked about splitting up with his wife (I guess) and after she left he nailed his train set to the dining room table (just because he could.) I love John Prine.
Saw him at the Roxy in '76 on Sunset blvd in L.A. Have seen him 23 times and counting. In Sarasota, FL in 2005 I was allowed to take my Guild backstage and meet him and have him sign my guitar. It's been a great experience and I hope it will continue to be for years to come
