John Adams

February 15, 1947 -
born in Worcester, MA, composed during the Contemporary period
John Adams (born 1947 in Worcester, MA) is among the most influential and frequently performed composers of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. His early works were influenced by minimalism, but he developed an individual style characterized by rhythmic vitality, lyricism, a harmonic language that embraces post-Romanticism, expressive breadth, and a gift for shaping large musical structures. He has received the Grawemeyer Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, and numerous Grammys. Major works include Harmonielehre for orchestra, the Violin Concerto, the "docu-operas," Nixon in China, The Death of Klinghoffer, and Doctor Atomic, and On the Transmigration of Souls for choruses, tape, and orchestra. ~ Stephen Eddins, Rovi

John is Pure genius of the modern times. He has the sensibility of great joy of emotion and Imagination like no other composer.
Adams is terrific. Possibly the best American composer of all time. Stravinsky was pretty fine too. Oh there's several "bests".He's one of them.

First got turned on to John Adams when I heard Short Ride in a Fast Machine in the concert hall.

Fantastic stuff!

cognitively satisfying while instinctivel y moving... perhaps more enduring of the modern composers?
I played in my high school band and the local military band with John Adams (long time ago) ... so I knew him before he became "John Adams." No surprise, though -- he was (and is) clearly gifted. Read his autobiograph y , "Hallelujah Junction" for some great insights on the development of his pieces and on the mechanics of contemporary music in general. It's highly readable and informative.
Great stuff! The most important living American composer. Pandora just played "Short Ride in a Fast Machine." Fabulous!

the new Ravel but slightly cooler ...oh ...that is silly I guess... I am always blown by this composer
Tranquil.

He is from Worcester Mass which is pronounced 'Wuhster' (like the oo in the word 'wood') which is why they list him as being from 'Wooster'. There is no Wooster. If you live in Worcester you pronounce it 'Wuhsta'. ;-)
He is at the same time gigantic and minimal, solumn and bold, anticipatory and reflective. His music always brings me joy. It is a tonic at times of illness and a true gift to the American tradition of orchestral music.
how come Phillip Glass fans and John Adams fans always bicker amongst each other. Can't we all get along, I mean they're both great in their own right.
Brilliant man, John Adams. Still waiting for my 'modern era' station to play Harmonilehre , Harmonium, and Grand Pianola so I can thumb them up.
John Adams is a wonderful composer and a great example of "Americanis" . . . of course there are good reasons for this. ;)
AAAAAAAaaaaa a a a a a a a a a a h h h h h h h h h h h h h !
