Johann Strauss II (1825-1899) was an Austrian composer of the 19th century, celebrated for his waltzes and operettas. His father, the composer and orchestra leader Johann Strauss I, wanted his eldest son to become a banker, but a career in music was inevitable, and in 1844 he conducted his first concert. Forming his own orchestra the next year, Strauss eventually toured Europe and traveled as far afield as Russia and the United States. His popular waltzes include On the Beautiful Blue Danube, the Emperor Waltz, and Tales from the Vienna Woods, and his most famous operetta is Die Fledermaus. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi
