Joe Sample

One of the many jazzmen who started out playing hard bop but went electric during the fusion era, Joe Sample was, in the late '50s, a founding member of the Jazz Crusaders along with trombonist Wayne Henderson, tenor saxman Wilton Felder, and drummer Stix Hooper. The Crusaders' debt to Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers wasn't hard to miss -- except that the L.A.-based unit had no trumpeter, and became known for its unique tenor/trombone front line. Sample, a hard-swinging player who could handle chordal and modal/scalar improvisation equally well, stuck to the acoustic piano during the Crusaders' early years -- but would place greater emphasis on electric keyboards when the band turned to jazz-funk in the early '70s and dropped "Jazz" from its name. Though he'd recorded as a trio pianist on 1969's obscure Fancy Dance, 1978's Rainbow Seeker was often described as his first album as a leader. In contrast to the gritty music the Crusaders became known for, Sample's own albums on MCA and, later, Warner Bros. and PRA have generally favored a very lyrical and introspective jazz-pop approach. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi

Joe Sample is one of the most profound Jazz piano players of the century...I love his compassion for the music. Awesome..
Joe in the man. Invitation is my all time favorite record. The lush string arrangements and beautiful piano reminds me of the music my dad use to listen when I was a kid. Miss my dad and appreciate the musical legacy he left me.

If you love the Hunter...pla y this song with another hard to find artist's Rodney Franklin's Learning to Love........ t h o s e two songs played back to back will drive you insane...lol
I fell in love with Joe Sample 30 years ago... scanning radio stations and heard his music, but didn't know who the artist was...... It took me 15 years to find out who it was..... That one song had branded me and I went to every music store looking for it.... I collected almost all various Jazz artists trying to find that one song, Then one night about 3 am, a jazz radio station in Seattle played it...... The name of the song is The Hunter...... It haunted me for years.
The fact he played electric piano on Steely Dan's Third World Man on the Gaucho album says it all about his worth.
I remember like if it was yesterday back in 1979 when I moved to NY from PR my cousin played the original vocal version with the Jazz Crusaders on his super duper stereo system turn table. After that I got hooked with Jazz.
Hi unique and elegant style is so good for the soul!
Joe is unique and his sound says "Joe Sample", unmistakable . Love you Joe
This was the first Jazz record I bought back in 1980 when I was 17. Still have the vinyl LP.

Been grooving on Joe since I was a little boy and I'm 54 now. Simply put he's legendary.
This has been my favorite album (really next to Rainbow Seeker) since college. I wore that tape out in my dorm room. Kept me company on many drives on Highway 1 between Santa Cruz and San Francisco. Good times!
The song is with the group Take 6 and is entitled You Turn, on the Spellbound album also on YouTube.

Joe Sample is one of the most accomplished keyboard players of his time. Sharing his musical genius for close to fifty years and paving the way for generations of classical, contemporary , fusion and new age artist to come. was and remains light years ahead of his time. Been a fan of his since 1968 when I fell in love with the album Old Socks New Shoes. Keep on Keeping Joe.

joe sample is so smooth and timeless
I saw Joe Sample with the Crusaders twice, once in New Orleans and the second time in Oxford, England. I was so close to the stage that I asked Stix Hooper for his drum sticks after the performance and he simply handed them to me. They had his name embossed on them. That was over 20 years ago.
Joe Sample is simply everything that defines being a master of your craft.
wow
