Agustín Barrios-Mangoré

May 23, 1885 - August 7, 1944
born in San Bautista de las Misiones, composed during the Modern period
After receiving his training from Gustavo Sosa Escalada, Barrios left Paraguay for one week of concerts in Argentina. He was so successful that he toured for 14 years. In 1934 he went to Europe to perform, becoming the first Latin-American guitarist of stature to do so. His performances have been compared to Segovia for their interpretation and to Paganini for their virtuosity. Barrios composed over 100 works, many of which he attributed to obscure early composers in the hope that this would allow them to be regarded seriously. Some of his pieces are now in the repertory (=Danza paraguaya= and =El catedral=) and many more would be, if not for his carelessness in publishing them. He was the first classical guitarist to make a gramophone recording. ~ Lynn Vought, Rovi

Don't read this because it actually works. You will be kissed on the neares possible Friday by the love of your life. However if you don't post this you will die in 2 days. Now you've started reading so don't stop. This is so scary put this on at least 5 songs in 143 minutes. When done press f6 and your lover's name will come on the screen in big letters. This is so scary because it actually works.

There are many things in life that can be call marvelous. The music that this talented composer has left for us to enjoy certainly ranks among the few beautiful things that are VERY MARVELOUS!
Memories to my mind! refined in it's essence! Mangore make us think on what we can do with acoustic guitar, so complex and a great composer...
Elegant, refined, and beautiful -- music of appropriate simplicity and complexity, merged together as one unified whole.
He had an unbelievable sense of melody, harmony, virtuosity, expression, and feel for the dynamics of the guitar. Strong candidate for greatest composer of guitar music (Williams thinks so). Maybe Segovia didn't like him because he was jealous of his digital ability.
One of the most underrated Composers ever. He was way ahead of his time, which is demonstrated by the fact that more people are discovering him now, over 60 years after his passing. A contemporary of Segovia, but Segovia was an Academic, a Technician. Barrios was a true artist, and pioneer of the guitar.
The whole world should know about him, not only the GuitarPlayer - c o m m u n i t y .
He deserves the attention from all the nations that his music( genius deeds) reached. In my opinion, He died young because he reached his goals(best composer of all times, first guitarist to record guitar music ever, traveled around the world, infinite recognition) . We all expect to see a documentary or movie exposing the uniqueness of his life.

I discovered Barrios last year and can't stop listening and enjoying his music. As a guitars and bassist myself I’m always looking for inspiration and Barrios to me is like discovering a buried treasure. The more I listen and learn about him the more I'm amazed at the genius in his writing and guitar playing and also of the man himself as a musician and this inner personality which was truly divine. I'm on a quest to find out why this genius has not been recognized by the general public? I’ve re
I still can't believe that Segovia failed to appreciate his work...
Guitarist John Williams also chose him as the "greatest classical guitar composer." lived in El Salvador (where he is buried) until his death. Married a Salvadorian and taught guitar to many of his followers.

My opinion is simply "he was amazing at what he did".
high art...

Haunting and spiritual. I would put him at the top with the best composers for guitar. Imagine seeing him live!
I enjoy Barrios Mangore, but I'd like to know how long did he live in El Salvador.
he is just really great. his music is the best anywhere because its so simple and beauitfully complex. my favorite is una limosna por el amor de dios.
Will you please add Berta Rojas' recordings of Barrios' pieces?
