Jean-Philippe Rameau

September 25, 1683 - September 12, 1764
born in Dijon, France, composed during the Baroque period
Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) was one of the most versatile musicians of the French Baroque, celebrated as a composer, organist, violinist, conductor, teacher, and theoretician. Although he held several posts as an organist between 1702 and 1722, Rameau had already begun publishing several volumes of harpsichord music, and by the age of 50 he prepared to mount his first opera. He also published his Traité de l'harmonie in 1722, establishing a concurrent career as an author. Rameau's chief competitors were Lully and Pergolesi, yet despite controversies and intrigues, he was able to find support from Louis XV, who raised him to the nobility. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi

This is some bad a** music...
Was J. R. also a philosopher or something like that?
Love French Baroque opera. It is a welcome change from da capo.
