Jann Arden

Canadian singer/songwriter Jann Arden was born Jann Arden Richards in Calgary, Alberta in 1962. Two of her biggest musical influences during her childhood were John Denver and Karen Carpenter. Arden didn't have abundant dreams of stardom back then, but she did love music and began writing her own songs when she was only 13. At 17 she recorded a debut single, "Never Love a Sailor," released in 1980 under the name Jann Richards. After the single, she spent years performing at numerous clubs and festivals. As a singer, she joined bands like Factor 4 and Hip Hugger, perfecting her skills over time. It took Arden 13 years to move from that first independent effort to a full-length release, Time for Mercy, on the A&M Records label. A couple of the singles from the debut album became hits and helped Arden claim a Juno. In 1994, she completed a sophomore offering, Living Under June, proving she was no fleeting success.

The album Happy? followed in 1997, and Blood Red Cherry came out in 2001. A greatest-hits comp emerged soon after, as did Live with the Vancouver Symphony. The next few years found Arden writing and trying her hand at reality television. She came out with a couple books of poetry and personal narrative during this time; If I Knew, Don't You Think I'd Tell You was published in 2002, and I'll Tell You One Damn Thing, and That's All I Know followed in 2004. She also went on to author an advice column for Elle Canada. On top of all this, the musician started a diner in Calgary, The Arden, which in 2003 spawned a reality TV show called The Arden Diner. In spite of all the publicity, the restaurant closed in early 2005. As busy as she was, Arden's extracurricular activities didn't keep her out of the studio; she released another album, Love Is the Only Soldier, in 2003 and a self-titled full-length two years after that. Arden released a covers album in early 2007, the aptly titled Uncover Me, and followed it up with a Canadian tour. Her tenth studio album, Free, arrived in 2009, followed in 2010 by the live CD/DVD Spotlight. A second album of covers, Uncover Me, Vol. 2, arrived the following year. ~ Charlotte Dillon, Rovi

I'm troubled by these singers doing note for note, phrase by phrase imitations of the original artists, often of the person who not only made the song famous but who wrote it as well -- the same arrangement, even an identical voice, riding the coattails of the original artist. I heard one yesterday on here of Queen Lateefah doing that with Phoebe Snow's Poetry Man: total imitation. It's one thing to cover somebody else's tune, it's another to rip them off like this.
I love it
love love love this song
never heard this artist sounds good but I prefer lulu's version
At 17 is a remake, but a very good one!!
beautiful song...helps ease some of the remembered pain, wish I could help my 17-year old self cheer up and believe things would get better
Is 17 an original of hers?
ONE OF MY FAVORITE SONGS
yea.....what s that album cover all about?!?

Boy, Canada has sure given us some of the best folk and alternative rock muscians, Its gotta be either in the water, the great expansive scenery, the social elements, or just plain old great Canadian genes. Arden is so great for the poetry in her music. My dream vacation would be to spend several months in Canada meeting the people, and going to all the small music club venues I can find from British Columbia to Nova Scotia. God bless the Canadians for what they've given us in great poetic music

Jann Arden has always been powerful, she is getting even stronger..lo v e d her for years. I am originally from Arizona and just moved back from Winnipeg. I know now what makes her so strong, poetic and beautiful... . T h a n k s for getting me through 4 Peg winters Jann! I drew from your strength.
MEND......, unusal cool and smooth. Her voice is full of emotion and you can tell she likes pushing it to see what comes out. True artistic spunk. I like it.
LOVE this version. My fav.

i jump on the arden band wagon years ago with that damn tune i can't get it out of my head i forgot the name of it. i do have all of her cd's good stuff..
Surprised no one's mentioned it yet, but she has a shocking good backing band. Of course, I'm a pretty big prog / folkrock fan, and there's plenty of fizzing guitars and organs there. Good stuff.

I was just introduced to Jann Arden three months ago and I can't get enough of her! She is very addicting!
The music (not so hot on the lyrics)and Jann's haunting voice are captivating. I agree with Ron, I could listen to her for hours.

Another great Canadian singer is making her mark. The "Insensitive " song really gets to me - been there, done that. Wonderful voive - I could listen to her for hours.
I love her
Jann Arden is probably one of my most favorite artist of all time. Lyrically beautiful, poetically inclined; her songs make my heart happy. I love every song I've heard by her and I only wish she'd tour America and hit Atlanta just once. I'd spend whatever it took to see her perform live.
"Insensitive " off of the Living Under June album is one of my favorites of all time.
She has a marvelous voice and tone. I love her as an artist.

I first heard her music in a movie and have loved her ever since. I dont usually purchase a whole album, but when I purchased Living Under June it became my most favorite. I can listen to her music over and over and never get bored.
