At the tender age of 20, New York vocalist Jane Monheit was the first runner-up in the 1998 Thelonious Monk Institute vocal competition, winning a $10,000 scholarship to further her musical education. Judges couldn't exactly place her sound, which blended natural elegance with a potent yet impressively controlled presentation, and by 2000 Monheit had joined Diana Krall as one of the highest-touted female talents in jazz. That May she signed to N-Coded and released her debut, Never Never Land. Angelic and conservative, Monheit's structured set of ten popular standards illustrated her still-emerging vocal talents. Come Dream with Me arrived in 2001; it consisted of several standards as well as a few lesser-known jazz compositions. The album wasn't as widely praised as her debut, but her growth as a performer was still evident. Since that time she has released several albums, including In the Sun in 2002, Taking a Chance on Love in 2004, the holiday-themed Season in 2005, and Surrender in 2007. In 2009, Monheit released the album The Lovers, The Dreamers and Me which featured her version of the classic Muppets ballad "The Rainbow Connection." A year later, Monheit returned, this time on Emarcy, with Home. In 2013, she released her ninth studio album, the Gil Goldstein-produced Heart of the Matter. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, Rovi
Bought her first CD when it came out in 2000. Been a sold fan since then; although, I haven't always liked every chart on every CD. However, on the whole, she has grown from one strength to the next. She is dynamite in concert.
Proudhawkart./ NO SOUL? Listen to her sing Blame It On My Youth

She has that very pure, open sound of Ella.

Obviously a wonderful voice but, she just doesn't seem to have any soul to me. There is just some intangible thing that's missing. Maybe she'll develope it. I hope so because the rest of the package is there.
Jane's version of I Wish You Love is one of my favorites. I saw Her at the Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood. She finished the night with Over the Rainbow, what a talent!

first heard her sing Over the Rainbow on Sky Captain movie and was instantly in love with her voice.

Love her voice- and a real singer of the old school
I backdoored into being a Jane Monheit fan. I heard her duet with Michael Buble, and got curious. I was a huge fan of I Won't Dance. Now, I want the whole catalogue!
I agree with John. One of the best live performances I ever witnessed!

Perfect pitch and great interpretation...Jane's fantastic!
If you like Jane, give a listen to the late Nancy LaMott. Tragically early death, but she left a treasure trove of great music for us. When I heard Jane's "Blame It On My Youth" just now I ambled over to see it were, as I expected, Nancy. It wasn't, but it surely COULD have been.
Do not know this name..She sounds as if I should know this name. Not quite C. Connor or J. Christy or Ella but they are not like Jane Monheit either. I will try to get to know her as time passes!!!!!
Her voice sounds so mature and experienced for her age. she's great!

I was fortunate to see Jane about 4 years ago in a small venue (200 people, literally 20 feet from her. She was incredible; not just a beautiful voice, but mesmerizing stylings and a riveting stage presence. If you ever have the change to see her live - DO! - and support her career by buying her CDS.

Her Duet with Michael buble was really great, which is now one of my favourite duets. Kudos, and many wishes for success. I wish more people would play in the low south. ; _ ; No jazz for me
Three times I've seen her perform in LA & S.Barbara. What a very special evening they all were. Her husband plays the drums and her baby son, "Jack" is back stage with her father. My favorite song she sings is "Bill" and of course, "Over The Rainbow". Wish she would come back to the west coast soon...
