James MacMillan (born 1959) is the outstanding Scots composer to emerge in the late 20th century. Much of his major work is informed by his devout commitment to Roman Catholic spirituality and the ideology of Liberation Theology. His work is strongly eclectic, but is usually rooted in tonality and frequently based on plainchant, so his music has achieved popularity with a broad range of audiences. He came to prominence with the theater piece Busqueda, the orchestral Confessions of Isobel Gowdie, and the percussion concerto Veni, Veni, Emmanuel, written for Evelyn Glennie. Other significant works include Cantos Sagrado and The Berserking. ~ Stephen Eddins, Rovi
