James Ingram began performing with the band Revelation Funk in the early '70s, moving from Akron, Ohio to Los Angeles in 1973. During the '70s, Ingram supported Ray Charles on the road with backup vocals and piano, played keyboards behind the Coasters on Dick Clark's oldies revues, and was Leon Haywood's musical director. After hearing a demo of him singing "Just Once," Quincy Jones asked Ingram to perform on his new album. Released in 1980 on The Dude, the number 17 "Just Once" was Ingram's first success, resulting in three Grammy nominations -- Best New Artist, Best Pop Male Vocal, and Best R&B Vocal -- winning in the two latter categories. Throughout the '80s, Ingram had steady popular success singing duets, but all of his solo albums failed to make a dent in the charts; in 1990 he scored his first solo hit, "I Don't Have the Heart." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
I first heard this song in the movie; The Last American Virgin. I immediately found a kinship with the lead actor and this song has been the lyric of my life.
soo smoooth, his voice is a gift from above.. Let's not forget we all have talent(s). Let's figure out what they are and use it for good & to glorify Jesus: our Heavenly Father!! :)

i grew up listening to this bratha, & he surely made many of my dates happen.
I'm not a big fan of R&B from this era, but I know a great voice when I hear it! I rank James Ingrams voice up there with Karen Carpenter's and Freddie Mercury's as one of my favorite voices of all time. When a James Ingram song is playing, I make my kids stop what they are doing and listen to perfection!
one of my favorits songs-what a great voice! what happened to him?

He is a consummate vocalist. I love the way he phrases the lyrics and his range is astounding. I also know that he has his roots deep in spiritual music and these are just a few of the reasons I think he is one of the brightest, yet under-appreciated musical artists out there. James, I shall always remain a dedicated admirer of what you create!
James quite frankly, is the best. Never really honored for his work. He takes you back to a time in your life that was just so pure. He has one of the best vocies in Music history. I guess he was running from his true calling and God just could not bless the rest of his career,He should have been in Gospel. Has anyone ever heard him sing gospel?
