James Hunter is one of the best (and one of the few) British blue-eyed soul singers to emerge in the late 20th century. Hunter began his roots music career in the 1980s under the name Howlin' Wilf. His solo recordings feature rhythm & blues in the style of the 1950s, pitched between R&B, early rock & roll, and early soul. His 1994 solo debut, ...Believe What I Say, had guest appearances by Doris Troy and Van Morrison, and Hunter appeared on a couple of Morrison's mid-'90s albums, as well as performing as part of Morrison's Rhythm & Blues Revue. Hunter, also a skilled guitarist, wrote most of the material on his 2001 release Kick It Around. Go Records/Rounder picked him up a few years later, and he released his third full-length album, People Gonna Talk, in 2006. The album went on to be nominated for a 2006 Grammy Award. Hunter left Rounder after the record's release and eventually emerged on Hear Music with The Hard Way in 2008. His wife Jacqueline was diagnosed with cancer after the album's release, and Hunter took time off. She eventually passed away in October of 2011. Hunter re-emerged as the James Hunter Six as an acknowledgment of his backing musicians who had stuck it all out with him; they'd been together for two decades. In 2012, he and the band teamed up with producer Gabriel Roth, co-founder of Daptone Records. The end result was Minute by Minute, which was released by Go Records in February of 2013. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
Our local listener driven radio station turned me on to James but they dont play so much of his work. Our local Jazz station, KPLU.org picked him up and plays his tunage on the blues show Sat & Sun 6-12 and they play James' great tunes on the regular programming as well. I have a happy radio, happy feet, and a grumpy neighbor. I like the north sea jazz cut on You tube, Corina, and all his stuff. That Hammond B3 blows me away.
What I Love about James Hunter. Is how he insists on using acoustic instruments. The sound is Pure, along with his unique voice. He is a Unique! I cant wait to hear NEW material!
I had no idea he was Howlin' Wilf. I saw him in Norway in 91 or 92 at the Nottoden Blues festival. He was great back then.

I found this great music by accident after riding from my hotel to the airport with them. When James (who I know now to be the lead) said they played old school soul, I had to look them up. Love this music. Real music, not some enhanced studio magic. Good stuff, mate.
Pandora has been a saint to me today! Even though these artists are covering the same songs over and over again, you find new artists/bands that just do it in a way that perfects a song furthermore than what it was originally :)

This guy and his band are the real thing. We went for a walk after his concert at the Triple Door in Seattle and when we came back, he was smoking a cigarette on the fire escape railing with his DA haircut and pointy boots beside his bus. Total time warp, totally now.

Where have I been? Where has he been? The instrumentals are fabulous. Thank You Pandora!

He is amazing. His sax players live are parallel to his talent. His entire band is a treat to see live!
I caught him in New London, CT about a year ago. A fan said to him"I love you James I've had your disc on my player for six months." James replied, "Need a screwdriver?"
That's great to hear lizzerd99, I will be seeing James at an intimate venue in June; can't wait!! Love his style and sound...always makes me feel so happy. You just can't sit still when you hear his music.

James is wonderful.. I heard People gonna talk..and loved it. It has a way of putting me in a time where I wish I could be in a lounge enjoying a live show and yet being back in time. I was sad to know I missed a show..
This guy has one smooth voice; very soulful...the closest thing to Sam Cooke.

James Hunter is perfect to listen to while sitting either alone or with friends out on the deck with a glass of cheap red in one hand and the dog near by. I first heard of him on Pandora. I've got the "James Hunter Station" locked in on Pandora.
