Jake Shimabukuro

Ukulele master Jake Shimabukuro has taken the four-string, two-octave instrument to places no one could have imagined back in the golden years of Don Ho, ranging freely across the music spectrum from jazz, blues, and funk to bluegrass, classical, and folk with the ease of a musician fully in command of the possibilities of his chosen instrument. Born November 3, 1976 in Honolulu, Hawaii, Shimabukuro was given his first ukulele lesson by his mother when he was only four years old. Fascinated by the uke, he eventually began playing regularly at a local Honolulu café. He was a founding member of Pure Heart, and played on the trio's first two albums before leaving to form Colon. In 2001, Shimabukuro began his solo career, releasing Elaine Maru (In Memory Of) on Surfside Records that same year. He signed with Epic in 2002 and released Sunday Morning on the label a year later, following it with Skyline in 2003. In 2005 he found an international distributor for his own label, Hitchhike Records, and began issuing his own CDs, including Crosscurrent, Dragon, My Life, and the much lauded Gently Weeps, which included a haunting version of George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." Shimabukuro has completely rewritten the book on the possibilities of the ukulele, and his skill on the instrument attracted the ear and attention of Béla Fleck who has used Shimabukuro as both an opening act and as a sit-in guest with the Flecktones. Shimabukuro's 2011 release, Peace, Love, Ukulele, topped Billboard's World Albums chart, and he followed it with Grand Ukulele, produced by Alan Parsons with orchestrations by Kip Winger (and recorded live with no overdubs), a year later in the fall of 2012. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi

He came up under my Spanish Guitar station. I haven't really heard it with a ukelele. Very interesting. And then he throws in a little Santa action to spice things up even more. Quite talented.
I lived on Oahu for 7 years and traveled the outer island frequently, attending many concerts to listen and experience the many rich cultural music forms Hawaii-based musicians and/or local halau artists have produced and perform. I fell in love with it all, especially slack key guitar. Jake is so masterful at capturing and playing the uke in musical idioms that transcend the sound of the islands but music that is classical and lyrical appealing to all who love the music of strings.
loves me some Ukulele....
What a wonderful gift to share with our world. Mahalo nui loa, Jake!!!
Just saw Jake last night in Illinois. Wow. What virtuosity; and so incredibly humble. Amazing.

I saw him live at Humbodlt State University in Arcata, California. For 1 1/2 hours he entertained my family, my two young daugthers, and my old parents. His range is impressive and it is beyond obvious that he has quite the gift of music. In addition, he a very nice person who took the time to sign people ukeles and talk. Mahalo, Jake! You deserve the rocket to stardom!
I was born on Oahu, and grew up around Hawaiian music, but this is taking things to amazing places. WOW
I have never heard such beauty from four tiny strings.
I never in my wildest dreams thought I'd have a Uke hero ;-) Mahalo, Jake!
