One of the great jokesters in jazz (whose spontaneous monologues are as hilarious as they are tasteless), Jack Sheldon's personality has sometimes overshadowed his excellent trumpet playing and effective vocals. Sheldon started playing professionally at age 13. He moved to Los Angeles in 1947, joined the Air Force and played in military bands. After his discharge, Sheldon became a popular figure on the West Coast, playing and recording with many top musicians including Jimmy Giuffre, Herb Geller, Wardell Gray, Stan Kenton, Benny Goodman, Curtis Counce, and Art Pepper. He worked as an actor in the 1960s (including starring in the short-lived television series Run Buddy Run), was seen nightly on The Merv Griffin Show, and in the 1970s and '80s he performed with Benny Goodman, Bill Berry's big band, in the studios, and with his own groups. He also made his mark on millions of American children by being the vocalist for both "Conjuction Junction" and "I'm Just a Bill" from the Schoolhouse Rocks! series. Into the mid-'90s, Jack Sheldon (who often uses a big band arranged by Tom Kubis) remained quite active in the Los Angeles area, recording regularly for Concord and his Butterfly label. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
Jack was surely one of a kind? We were kids growing up together in Jacksonville, Florida in 1946! He played trumpet in my little danceband (all eight pieces) and on a good night we earned 100 bucks--not bad for those days? Lots of fun for a sixteen and seventeen year old! Jack showed a lot of potential talent then and I'm not surprised he prospered on the West Coast? I wish him further success in the future!
When you think small intimate club jazz, Jack Sheldon pops right to the forefront... When I lived in LA I followed him around from place to place...Super musician and hilarious raconteur...He was tops for great entertainment...And show biz folks flocked to here him play and take verbal shots of his rye wit...I remember seeing Jack for the first time at Donte's in North Hollywood...Oh, so mellow and kewl...Keep your chops, baby!
Jack is still in L.A. playing a steady gig at Jax in Glendale every Thursday night. He's still as good as ever. Jax is an intimate venue (see jax.com) and you can converse with Jack between sets. He has many friends that stop by for a beer, etc. Since moving away from Glendale, my Thursdays aren't the same!
Jack played in my dance band in Jacksonville, Florida in the mid 40s. He was a little "nutty" even then but still a lotta fun. Hope he's doing well and his health is good.
