It's A Beautiful Day

San Francisco psychedelic folk-rock unit It's a Beautiful Day was primarily the vehicle of virtuoso violinist David LaFlamme, born April 5, 1941 in New Britain, Connecticut but raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. After beginning his musical education at age five, LaFlamme later served as a soloist with the Utah Symphony, following an army stint by settling in the Bay Area in 1962. There he immersed himself in the local underground music scene, jamming alongside the likes of Jerry Garcia and Janis Joplin; after his short-lived Electric Chamber Orchestra splintered, LaFlamme also co-founded an early incarnation of Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks before assembling It's a Beautiful Day in mid-1967. The group -- which originally included LaFlamme's keyboardist wife Linda, vocalist Pattie Santos, guitarist Hal Wagenet, bassist Mitchell Holman, and drummer Val Fuentes -- issued its self-titled debut LP on Columbia in 1969, scoring their biggest hit with the haunting FM radio staple "White Bird." Linda LaFlamme left It's a Beautiful Day soon after, going on to form Titus' Mother; keyboardist Fred Webb signed on for the follow-up, 1970's Marrying Maiden, while Holman exited prior to 1971's Choice Quality Stuff, recorded with new guitarist Bill Gregory and bassist Tom Fowler. In 1973, ongoing disputes over royalties forced LaFlamme out of the group he created, and upon installing new violinist Greg Bloch, the remaining members issued It's a Beautiful Day...Today before dissolving in the wake of 1974's 1001 Nights. LaFlamme mounted a solo career in 1977 with White Bird, continuing his protracted legal tussle with ex-manager Matthew Katz for years to follow; sadly, Pattie Santos died in a December 14, 1989 auto accident. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

How about White Bird ---Pandora?? ?
When I was 12 my best friend introduced her dad's album and played " white bird" my appreciation for beautiful music was born.
The most beautiful song I have ever heard. It moves my heart, my soul my mind.
DAVID LaFLAMME 0NE OF THE GREATEST VIOLINISTS THAT EVER LIVED.

Glad to see there are a lot of the older heads out and about that remember IABD.....I was able to be fortunate euff ta score a copy of It's A Beutiful Day in a flea market in Arkansas last year. No scratches!!
Sam Bush has been doing excellent covers of White Bird the past 2-3 years. I think he's recorded it too.

up there with Fairport Convention on some levels.
Oddly, I can't remember the year but saw IABD with Canned Heat in Houston. It was billed as Beauty and the Beast. Also saw David LaFlamme on his solo tour sometime in the 70's (I think), Dan Hicks opened the show and now I see they had a connection. And then David showed up on a Frasier episode, too cool.

You've got the wrong song list for Marrying Maiden...
White bird was, for me, one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard.
clearly an under rated and overlook group of the 60's. A serious impact on my musical life.

Remember this group from way back when---they didn't get a whole lot of East coast air play, but otherwise a decent group of the times. White Bird In A Golden Cage---their best.
Listening from then until now,.....Its A beautiful music, nuff said M.J
caught them twice in london, once at the royal albert hall with taj mahal and others, second time a couple nights later again with taj. love them now as much as them. another forgotten group poco! thats another story
Wonderful music for altered states when it first came out. Still good in my dotage. Got to see them perform live at the University of Texas baseball field summer of 1970. Standing next to the stage, all i could think was that Patty Santos had the best looking legs i would ever see in my life. Turns out i was right. Several years later David LaFlamme played the Armadillo World Headquarters and was still rocking. Listening to this music now sure takes me back.

Life is too short for those who laugh.

They were at Fillmore West, San Francisco, performing with Albert King and Ohm, June 1969 - the first rock concert event I had ever attended. Psychedelic! I saw them again in Santa Rosa a few years later at a larger venue. Their blue album has remained my #1 all-time favorite (tied with Let It Bleed by the Stones) all these years. It's the electric violins and cello that grabs me every time I hear them. White Bird is okay but not my favorite. It's the last two or three cuts in a row that do it f
Rest in Peace Patti Santos. We still remember and miss you.
It's a Beautiful Day was awesome and they still are, especially with White Bird.

They opened for Cream at the first concert I went to at the Oakland Coliseum. I saw them half a dozen more times around Reno & Tahoe at the Fun House even in Alabama while in the Air Force stationed in Biloxi. It's A Beautiful Day was one of my favorite bands to see live, back in the day. Thank you for the great music.
