Iris

Often described by critics as disposable, '80s synth pop acts such as Erasure and Depeche Mode continued to inspire young musicians to write hummable songs with a plethora of keyboards even into the '90s. Iris formed in 1993 as Forgiving Iris with Reagan Jones (vocals, keyboards) and Matt Morris (keyboards, programming). Jones and Morris met in college; they were taking an electronic music class and discovered they shared the same taste in artists. Forgiving Iris started performing at clubs in the Austin, TX, area, covering classic new wave songs. When the duo began opening up for other groups, they concentrated on their own material. Forgiving Iris contributed the track "Annie, Would I Lie to You" to the Electronic Fields compilation in 1996. The track became a cult favorite in dance clubs, but it had many fans wondering if, or when, the band was going to record a full-length CD. They shortened their name to Iris and released their debut album, Disconnect, on June 1, 1999, for the A Different Drum label. Disconnect was praised by music reviewers for its upbeat synth-driven rhythms. In the summer of 2000, Iris was voted Best Band and Best Album at the first annual American Synthpop Awards. ~ Michael Sutton, Rovi

I like that Reagan writes from his heart and life. Iris is awesome. Can't wait to hear the new album

Seen them many times in Austin, Tx
Iris has many great albums and does well live. Great band!
The Vortex at the Starlight ballroom has taken the place of Nocturne. It's run by Saga. No clue if it's beat or not though. And I went to the concert to see Seabound and actually liked Iris better. Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of either but they are acceptable.
And synthpop/tec h n o in general is seeing a huge revival in Philly

Synthpop aint dead jack a**
I think i heard Iris at club Shampoo (Philly pa) during its wednesday night Nocturne event (which recently came to a close), but Annie was the first song of theirs i heard many years ago. Their concert with Seabound was incredible. Another great Iris track is New Invaders... and it looks like i will picking up a new Iris album shortly, thanks for the heads up.
Pity this crap a** description forgot to mention the biggest influence in the band,... ah well.....

It's a shame synthpop is dead ;_;

The new album is Blacklight and it's really good. Closer To Real is as good as anything on Wrath.
taynaron
They just released a new album, Blackout. It's probably their best yet - though Wrath is hard to top...

Listening to the song Lands of Fire, and I'm so glad there's FINALLY a male singer in this genre that doesn't sing so horribly low and badly that it makes them sound just horrible.
This is one of the few Synthpop bands that I can't stomach. It's the vocalist, I think-- his voice undulates to the point that it's just annoying.
HOLY CRAP! I just realized I saw them as "Forgiving Iris" and have always been disappointed that they never did anything "bigger". I am so happy to hear the new beats and the possibility of a new range of music from the group. AWESOME!
scottlstuart
Wow does Annie sound like a really good Cause and Effect song!
what a yum-yum sound....
Lots of love for Annie, which is deserved, but I also like Hell's Coming With Me on Wrath..and are you sure you're not steampunk, Goth-Ann? lol that sounded quite steampunk.
Ok, I partially retract my previous statement. I'd forgotten about the song Annie. This is a happy, upbeat song that for some reason reminds me of driving around town with the top down during the spring thaw. I still don't care for the other songs I've heard, but Annie is a good track.
Great Lyrics, great vocals, great synth band!
They need to do a gig on OAHU!
Love these guys!
I live in Austin, and have been missing these guys since they moved to Chicago. They were in town a few months back and have a new CD called 'Hydra' that's still synth-y but much darker. 'Annie' has been a big favorite whenever I spin it at clubs and parties - it's just good synth-pop and very danceable.
Ugh- Iris is NOT good. and thanks, goethechylde .
Vash, good choice in Anime also. If you want a band that does sound simular to Iris, try Mesh. That is how I found Iris, and now I have all their albums.
buriburichan 8- VNV Nation and Covenant are more EBM style than synth-pop. There's a BIG difference, and it's rather noticeable compared to Iris.
Aloe plants?
This is the kind of music I make fun of but secretly do a discreet happy dance in my head when it comes on.
Hey... was listening to Oh, Annie or something like that and really liked it... sweet!

Like many of the rest of the peeps commenting here, I discovered this group via Pandora and I'm glad for it.

There needs to be more synthpop groups with clear-voiced singers out there; too many singers have semi-deep, monotone singing styles (VNV Nation, And one, Covenant come to mind). Apoptygma Berzerk came close. But Iris is a great example of a good singing voice combined with a solid synthpop production.
Hey, a neat new discovery on Pandora for me. I like! Now, I'm gonna have to go and FIND their albums, dangit!

For Varo: for me, "wet" refers to heavier, more layered, blurred sound, very full in tone and body. "Dry", to me, sounds clear, with few distortions or filler. If you have trouble isolating the layers in a piece, it's "wet", if you can pick them out by ear, it's "dry"... Try it while listening on a good set of head-phones- it'll be easier to distinguish the types. :)
Annie would i lie to you!!! there's something in particular about that song.... i dunno what it is but it got me. who else?
oh ya.. if you like annie would i lie to you; you should listen to endless... another really good song.
varo: "wet" sounds are like deeper, more "filling" sounds, that might not make much sense, but a "dry" sound is more like an 8-bit sound...

the best way to find out is just get a demo of a music program and mess with wet and dry...

however more synthpop bands employ a more dry sound whereas trance usually employs a very wet sound..

but this is one of my fav bands... such a good voice!
I sense a little bit of Cesium 137 in this. Or maybe a little of this is in Cesium 137? Well anyway, do any of you know what is meant by "a dry recording sound" versus a "wet recording sound." Because a lot of the electronica songs I like are apparently "wet" and I don't know what that references.

Iris should've been getting FM airplay in the U.S. a long time ago... Keep it up, guys.
<3 Been listening to them for a while, don't think I've given them a heart before. I love Iris!
'Nice' ain't a big enough word! Rolls along like a thousand gears all meshing together to create wheels within wheels. Or something.
Nice Synthpop!!
I've know of this band since they were called Forgiving Iris. So glad they are here on Pandora.
I found this band on my Clan of Xymox and Apoptygma Berserk stations. Very good stuff.

My favorite by them is "Hell's coming with me". It makes me think of the classic scene from "Tombstone" with Kurt Russell at the train station.
An absolutely amazing band.
I discovered them through Pandora from a Depeche Mode station.
"Annie, Would I Lie To You?" quickly became one of my favorite songs (In fact it's the first song that I ever bookmarked on Pandora)
the song "Annie Would I Lie To You" got me hooked
i found this band via pandora...an d i absolutely love them!
jeleo242
