The Innocence Mission

Centered around the husband-and-wife songwriting team of Don Peris (vocals, guitar) and Karen Peris (vocals, guitar, piano), Lancaster, PA natives the Innocence Mission crafted a tasteful, politically correct brand of collegiate folk-pop similar to Sarah McLachlan or 10,000 Maniacs (in fact, the Perises appeared on Natalie Merchant's 1998 album Ophelia). With a rhythm section composed of bassist Mike Bitts and drummer Steve Brown, the Innocence Mission released their eponymous debut album in 1989; Umbrella followed in 1991. Thanks to the advent of the adult alternative radio format, the Innocence Mission were able to break out to a wider audience with the release of their third album, 1995's Glow; material from the album appeared on the soundtrack of the film Empire Records and on the television show Party of Five.

The Innocence Mission remained quiet for several years, as the Perises made guest appearances on albums by Merchant, John Hiatt, and Joni Mitchell, in addition to having their first child. The latter experience greatly informed the group's fourth album, 1999's Birds of My Neighborhood, which witnessed the departure of drummer Brown, leaving the group officially a three-piece. The following year, the Innocence Mission released a limited-edition devotional album, Christ Is My Hope, on their own Innocence imprint; in 2001, the group moved to What Are Records? for Small Planes, which featured some songs from the Birds of My Neighborhood sessions that didn't make it onto that album. Befriended arrived in 2003 on the Badman label, followed in 2004 by a collection of lullabies and traditional works called Now the Day Is Over. The group's seventh and eighth studio albums, We Walked in Song and My Room in the Trees, arrived in 2007 and 2010, respectively. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi

Harriet wheeler of the Sundays has the most amazing voice in the world period. This instantly reminded me of her. In fact the station I made based on the Sundays brought this sweet soulfull sound of the innocense mission to me while trimming my hedges. Sweet, calming, and beautiful music that is timeless. Small planes is my favorite because of the guitar and her amazing voice.

Innocence Mission was an amazing transitional group in my world....... i n t r o d u c e d to me by an abusive father,and accepted by a loving husband..... . . t h e music of my life.....

Their sound is anathema to the culture where I live, especially the youth culture. But their gentle, peaceful, safe vibe is right where I want to be, especially at night. 'Now the day is over.' Wonderful.

First song I heard by them was Bright As Yellow on the Empire Records soundtrack. They also have Evensong on the Perks of Being a Wallflower st.

I think the politically correct comment in the review is really out of place. Innocence Mission has nothing to do with politics. For me, IM has a sweetness, gentleness, and integrity that the other artists similar to them just don't have. That's not to say that the other artists similar to them aren't good-- I love MacLachlan, Merchant. But Innocence Mission is like an American Cocteau Twins to me-- beauty in music.

The Innocense Mission...sh e has an amazing voice...give s me the chills kind of like The Sundays used to!

Their first three albums were magnificent. To bad pndora doesn't spotlight those as well, instead of just mentioning how good they were. I fell in love with them in '89 and have enjoyed everything they've done. The first two were the BEST.

First saw this group when they opened for Natalie Merchant in DC. Have followed them ever since. Beautiful music although the lyrics at times are difficult to understand.

God bless you Karen Peris- your voice just makes me happy

Actually I don't believe they ever had an album title "Bright as Yellow". That is a song from the "Glow" album and probably their biggest hit. It's the song that introduced me to The Innocence Mission and I became hooked. This group is really something special, I love their music.

It is ridiculous to pejoratively call them "politically correct," All Music Guide writer Steve Huey. They are sensitive, and honest and devotional, and clearly not motivated by being "PC."

They have three other albums that are not listed hear. Their first self titled, Umbrella and Bright as Yellow. I did not get into them till about 12 years ago and they were pretty old then. They never were top of the charts in their time but were very influential to other bands. If you can find the other CDs they are great. I think I like their first album the best but it was the last album I got of theirs. There are a couple of videos on youtube of them.

Their self titled first disc is from '89. Unfortunatel y it is out of print.

Isn't there another disc that is self-titled? I heard a cassette tape (yes, long time ago) that had tracks which I don't see anywhere on the discography.

I was introduced to this group by a housemate at PSU who was from Lawn, PA. Still enjoy the haunting, efferal breathes of the lead vocals.

Listened to "Small Planes" from my 'The Sundays' station I have on Pandora, I love her voice, reminds me of Harriet Wheeler. I will definitely be looking for more of Innocence Mission

I've loved following Don & Karen from their very beginning as Innocence Mission-reme m b e r "Black Sheep Wall" on WJTL's Preliminary Hearing.

Her way of singing was fine when they came out ages ago, but she keeps the little girl voice despite her age and over time it gets increasingly creepy...lik e the voice actress for Snow White, singing in girlish falsetto until she was 80.

This band strikes a great balance between being good music for adults and the ultimate child soothing music.
