I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness is a five-piece dark pop band out of Austin, TX; scene mates include Paul Newman, Windsor for the Derby, and Glorium. But I Love You, formed in 2001 and comprised of singer Christian Goyer, bassist Edward Robert, guitarists Ernest Salaz and Daniel Del Favero, and percussionist Tim White, is not all that predictable, at least if their debut album, Fear Is on Our Side, tells a reliable story. Where the band's self-titled EP, a five-song dazzler issued in 2003 on the daredevil Emperor Jones label (and reissued in 2006 by Secretly Canadian), offered up mildly doleful and semi-danceable indie rock courtesy of Spoon's Britt Daniel, who produced and helped swirl buzz on the band beyond the city limits, Fear Is on Our Side takes a turn for the seriously, achingly bleak. Echoes of Talk Talk and other visceral, introspective 1980s bands filter through the familiar guitar textures, but the mid-2000s is a new era for intelligent gloominess, and flavoring this brew is an overcharged mindfulness that suggests close attention to recent musical history, especially electronica. Though the group's output so far suggests a willingness to climb and explore, cynicism would seem to be an enduring I Love You trait. Their recognition of its versatility promises to propel them. ~ Tammy La Gorce, Rovi
Well all with interest in symbols, it also can be argued that the cross was a Pagan symbol first, and the Christian's had the Five Pointed Star...When Jesus died on the cross, the Christians took it back claiming it was the symbol of Jesus dying for our sins. Since then the Pagans have claimed the Five Pointed Star. Oh, and inverted is not Demonic, nor is it Satanic...it is a symbol of erasing or banishing negativity. I guess it all has to do with how one views spirituality.
Good band. Those of you who can't get past an inverted cross probably don't listen to Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, or a 1,000 other bands that use that symbol as a polarizing agent to shock. If your faith can be shaken by a printed symbol, you have deep problems. Remember, god sees you while you are on the toilet & spanking it too.
Lol, it could be argued that these dudes are SUPER Christian, not satanic. Let me explain: the upside down cross is definitely St Peter's cross, a Christian symbol, as he was crucified upside down. St Peter was also the apostle do deny knowing Jesus 3 times after his arrest. It could be that Peter is the one saying to Christ "I love you, but I have chosen Darkness" in his denial. In the end, shrug, the music is only ok by my book.
This discussion shouldn't be concerning the inverted cross; it should be concerning the ridiculously long band name that just sounds stupid. It's not even a band name; it's a band phrase.

The inverted cross has long been a Christian symbol. Saint Peter's cross. Not Satanic. (Although some people think it is and have used it as such) Anyway, fun band. Didn't think anything of the album covers until I looked down at the comments!
Punk Guy, I never thought I would enter into a theological debate on pandora, but here it goes. You mentioned that the Christian God was separate from humanity. According to the gospels (John 1:1,14), God became flesh and dwelt among us. So the Christian perspective does not hold that God is separate from humanity. He is very much a part of humanity, and continues to be so to this day. Christ is both Son of God and Son of Man, fully God and fully human.
Thank you abiz206! What is with the inverted cross? It's a Satanic symbol, and they must have a very good reason for having one. Also ContradictionsCollapse, since when did being a Satanist make you a bad person? Satanist just think that instead of worshiping a God that is out side of one's self, you should worship the God inside yourself.

So what is with the inverted cross, then? Just curious and all.
Don't even get me started when it comes to Satanism and all that s**t. Just because they are dark doesn't mean they would be any where close to being Satanic or anything. It's just the music that they have chosen to do, and it suits them just fine. Punk Guy, you are a very ignorant person to think that they are breaking the mold for Satanic metal bands. They Are Not. I have met these guys before, Ed is the complete opposite of anything like that, same with Dan and everyone.
Uhh, I am very well aware of the origin of the word Satan. And that retard who made Satan into a horned demon is Hieronymus Bosh, the man who first painted Hell. And being a Satanist is about more than just being an automaton, what you are describing is a Christian. Satanists worship themselves as their own God, and they believe that we are all our own God. That is the opposite of the Christian philosophy that there is only one God, who is separate from humanity.
Punk Guy, you dont know satanic music that well do you?

Satanists? You don't even have to do anything to be a "satanist" in this society - just live your normal consumer lifestyle, drain the earth of its resources, and the Dark One (who is just collective ignorance) is happy. ILYBICD is sweet. Worship on. Besides - a 'satan' is simply a sufi word for the darkest, most difficult challenge a person must face and overcome in life...somehow turned into a little red guy in a suit with a pitchfork. Retarded.
Nice sound, but are these guys Satanists or are they just using the inverted cross because they want to shock us or make themselves have a more dark image. Because if the latter is the case then they are a bunch of posers, even worse than all the black and death metal bands that pose Satanist but really just do it to seem more brutal. However if they are Satanists, then good for them to break the satanic mold that all satanists are in metal bands.
Well regardless of their name or their music, they sure do seem to be getting attention. I thought it was a strange name, but so is something like Bedsit Poets or Lime Spiders. Still artists making music, and if they 'suck' or are 'good' is a matter of preference. That being said, all of your comments have been highly amusing.
I don't mean to jump on the bandwagon, but come on. I like what I've heard so far, but how many shots of Jager did it take to decide that this was a cool name for the band?

I feel like this right now. Pretty much i love someone, but i'm choosing darkness. HELP.

-Seriously?
Anyway, fun band. Didn't think anything of the album covers until I looked down at the comments!
