New Orleans-based, indie folk outfit Hurray for the Riff Raff was formed by singer/songwriter/banjo player Alynda Lee, a Bronx-raised, Puerto Rican troubadour who left home at 17 to ride the rails, and eventually landed in the Big Easy. After honing her skills on the washboard with a gang of train-yard musicians called the Dead Man's Street Orchestra, she picked up the banjo that a close friend had given her and began writing her own songs. While Lee, drummer/violinist Yosi Pearlstein and bass player David Maclay served as the foundation for Hurray for the Riff Raff's signature blend of folk-blues and southern, gothic Americana, the trio was often rounded out by a rotating cast of accordion, guitar, organ and musical saw players. The band released their independent debut, Young Blood Blues, in 2010. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi
Holy s**t, last time I saw these kids was down in New Orleans pre-katrina. We were all digging half eaten sandwiches out of the trash and stealing half finished tourist drinks. Glad to see them make it!

It's so great to see Alynda have this success. I met her several eternities ago, first in NYC, later in Philly (RIP Wasteland Squat!). She used to sing this song about Wild Irish Rose that would get stuck in my head, and now I get to have all the Riff Raff songs stuck in there too! Keep rockin, all the best
This is very cool, it actually reminds me of 16 horsepower. I am hearing a lot of music that I have not heard of before. It's too bad radio stations don't play more than their same old formatted top 20 songs. Bands like this need to be put out there for everyone to hear.

Yep, different singers. However the old accordion player from Riff Raff and the trumpeter from Dark Dark Dark are one and the same. He's the frontman of Why Are We Building Such A Big Ship? I highly recommend checking them out, as well as Sam Doores and the Tumbleweeds, who have been touring with Riff Raff lately, you'll be gald you did!
