Resisting the musical trends in New York City, vocalist/guitarist Craig Finn (ex-Lifter Puller) formed the Hold Steady after moving from Minneapolis in 2000. Wanting to capture the sound of bands such as the Replacements and the Grifters, he recruited guitarist Tad Kubler (also ex-Lifter Puller), drummer Judd Counsell, and bassist Galen Polivka. Recording mostly live, the band released its debut, Almost Killed Me, on Frenchkiss Records in March 2004. Dave Gardener (Rocket from the Crypt, Drive Like Jehu) and Dean Botulonis signed on to produce Separation Sunday, which arrived in 2005. The World/Inferno Friendship Society's Franz Nicolay (keyboards) and Bobby Drake (drums), formerly of End Transmission and Arm, were also added to the Hold Steady lineup. The band's third effort, 2006's Boys and Girls in America, marked its first release for Vagrant. After writing the majority of their fourth record on the road, the Hold Steady returned to John Agnello's Water Music studio to record Stay Positive, their most heavily produced effort. In July of 2008, the album was released by both Vagrant and Rough Trade. In 2010 the band announced the departure of Franz Nicolay. Later that same year they released their fifth album, Heaven Is Whenever. ~ Kenyon Hopkin, Rovi
Had the pleasure of seeing them play a very small venue in Hayward WI. about three years ago. They were playing in Minnesota the next day I believe and somehow local radio guy was able to book them for the casino in Hayward. When they walked out and only saw about 200 people, if that, the lead singer smiled like, you guys don't know how lucky you are to be a part of this, then said were going to have have a lot of fun tonight. Was my favorite concert ever.
Just incredible. If you get a chance to see them live, don't pass it up. (Really good guys too. I often end up chatting with the band after club shows.)
The Hold Steady is just great.. Thanks for the real rock n roll boyz..

These guys sound pretty good. Much as I hate to admit it, Minnesota has produced some incredible music over the years - Dylan, The Replacements, the Jayhawks, etc. (Prince purposely excluded). I still hate the Vikings, though.
just saw them 3 nights in a row in hayward wi, cabooze mpls and 1st ave in mpls. 3 great shows. replay of 1st ave concert on 89.3 the current next thursday.
I first heard them a about a year ago. Sometimes I feel guilty that I don't listen to anything else now. Fun, smart, rockin good music. Depth and soul in almost every song.
It's so awesome listening to The Hold Steady, especially when they mention all the local hot spots, streets and other things that only locals would know about. That's why i love it so much, i know all the places they sing about. I've been to them, and frequent them to this day.
Now that I own Separation Sunday I find it hard to listen to anything but. Time spent listening to any other music just feels like time wasted. The Twin Cities will never be the same.

When I first discovered the Hold Steady, I listened to Boys and Girls In America on repeat for three days in a row, and nothing else. They are the s**t.
these guys rock! saw them with the drive-by truckers last week - it was an unbelievable a**-kickin' show. high-energy loudness with no holding back! loved the truckers and liked these guys, but their live show won me over completely! Rock Means Well!!!
I listened to the first three albums in succession on repeat almost constantly after I first heard them. They have a killer cover of the Violent Femmes' American Music which everyone should hear.
yay for these (mostly?) midwest boys! i heard them a couple years ago and loved them instantly...then eventiually learned that i actually went to HS with 2 (1 current) of them. that connection aside, i think they're amazing. i hear something new in their lyrics each time i listen...and often think "i think i was at that party!." full of irony...a fresh yet familiar sound...like springsteen in his early days, but with a youthful midwestern spin. smart, a bit ironic and cynical which i love...
I've seen them twice and they were terrific both times even though one show was in a crowded bar and the other was at the Gorge Ampitheatre. I have yet to hear their new album. Is it any good?
Simply the best american rock-n-roll band around right now. I sure hope they keep going and stay on an independant label - AND I'M GOING TO SEE THEM IN THREE DAYS!!!
