born in Bemersheim, Germany, composed during the Medieval period
Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179), the first composer whose biography is known, was one of the most remarkable and forceful individuals in Medieval Europe. Placed in a convent as a child, she took vows and eventually became an abbess, founding two convents of her own. A visionary mystic, she was also accomplished as a poet, painter, naturalist, theologian, and preacher, and she served as an advisor to political and religious leaders. Her music, which is notable for its distinctive departures from the conventions of plainchant, includes over 70 hymns, antiphons, and sequences, and the first surviving liturgical drama Ordo Virtutem. ~ Stephen Eddins, Rovi

She's not the first composer whose biography is known. There are many other who composed sacred music before her, including many of the Fathers of the Church, long, long before her.

God made us to sing, so he speaks through music. There are so many levels of creation and the creative process. She felt creation and the Lord of Creation. Beautiful words and music still exist at the hand of God... listen to the Song of Seikilos (the world's first complete song on record). This was a song made by a man to mourn his wife. On the tombstone, he wrote that his song was timeless, and forever in stone, a contrast to the song lyrics, which were about the shortness of life.
as a kid I had a tape of the canticles of ecstasy. And after hundreds of faithful hours listening to the haunting songs, it died. And of course I didn't know the name. Then with the advent of google, looked up...medieva l singing nuns and found her! Love the music.

Hildegard is my companion during my morning meditation. She takes me out of the mundane into a deep sense of spirituality and the experience both of God's transcendenc e and presence. Not an easy task! A German made movie of Hildegard's life called "Vision" is coming out in October. This is a wonderful song but I am concerned about Pandora listing her as living at a "nunnery" which is slang for a "whorehouse. " If she did in fact live in a convent at eight years old then this needs to be corrected. Maybe tossing stones into a vast ocean, but a ripple here and a ripple there makes the tide. Please correct this.

It is almost inconceivabl e to think that music was merely a "side project" for her. Hildegard von Bingen is certainly one of the great founders of medieval music and her contribution s to the advancement of knowledge and promotion of women as of equal standing to men is astounding for a 12th century nun. She was the Benjamin Franklin of her time.
