Composer Henri Dutilleux (born 1916) became one of the twin poles -- along with Pierre Boulez -- of post-World War II French music. Renouncing all of the music he composed before his Piano Sonata (1948), when Dutilleux' Symphony No. 1 (1951) first established his name he was working as a radio producer for the ORTF. Since then he has produced the orchestral Métaboles (1964), the cello concerto Tout un monde lointain... (1970) and the string quartet Ainsi la nuit (1977), all hailed as masterpieces. Slow and deliberate, Dutilleux' worklist is small and his music is anti-formalized; his enmity with Boulez is legendary. ~ Uncle Dave Lewis , Rovi
