Multi-instrumentalist and studio engineer Happy Rhodes (b. Aug. 9, 1965; Poughkeepsie, NY) began recording her own compositions in the mid-'80s, and had amassed enough songs for two albums by the time she met Kevin Bartlett, the owner of Aural Gratification Records. During 1986, Bartlett released three cassettes of Rhodes' music (Happy Rhodes, Vol. 1, Vol. 2, and Rearmament), and followed them a year later with Ecto. The duo, as Bartlett/Rhodes, played many live shows during 1987, but no recorded material resulted from the time. Happy Rhodes returned to solo status in 1991 with Warpaint, and a year later her first four albums were given CD releases on Aural Gratification. The year 1993 saw the issue of two new albums, Equipoise and RhodeSongs. After the 1994 album Building the Colossus, Rhodes released a full-length of live and unreleased music as The Keep. Many Worlds Are Born Tonight followed in 1998. ~ John Bush, Rovi
Her voice is almost identical to Kate Bush - although she seems to have a wider range to her voice.

wow...am i glad i was served up this delight on my kate bush channel. she has the closest sound to kate bush that i have heard, but keeps her own uniqueness. and btw, i don't think she's scary, i think she is hot!
Listening to some of Happy's tracks is like listening to new Kate Bush. The high pitched voice she uses sounds like old Kate Bush tracks. It's often weird to hear her voice but see Kate's face. I definitely think Happy is underrated!

More Happy notes: When you think "voice of an angel"...I know that's a cliche phrase, but just imagine it...and then listen to her high range.
I have been listening to Happy's beautiful 5 octive voice for over 20 years now and I never get tired of her. I own everything she has recorded and then some. She has an interesting writing style, mostly influenced by her turbulant childhood. I only wish she would get back in the studio or back on the road. I miss you Happy!

She is incredible and underrepresented and generally awesome!
Actually, this picture really doesn't do her justice. She is very pretty. And I'm really amazed that this review doesn't mention anything at all about her AMAZING vocal range. I have never heard anyone with such a range.
Haunting music - - hits the subconscious on many levels. Happy's range is something to recon with. Both her high range and low range is clear and pristine.
Happy is an amazing singer/artist. The only slight criticism is that some of her early works suffer from cheesy synth sounds. I wish she would redo this stuff with higher quality production....like 'buliding the colossus' has.
Happy Rhodes also has a vocal quality very much like early Kate Bush. She has the amazing ability to shift from sounding like Kate directly into Annie Lennox. Ecto will always be one of my favourite songs of hers.

Also recommended is her latest album, "Find Me", released in 2007. If you like Happy and other artists like her, there is a mailing list called Ecto. You can find details on how to join by going to http://www.ecto.org/.

These are haunting. The last one may make you cry.
Just do it.
