Hans Zimmer

Composer Hans Zimmer was born September 12, 1957 in Frankfurt, Germany; after relocating to London as a teen, he later wrote advertising jingles for Air-Edel Associates, and in 1980 collaborated with the Buggles on their LP The Age of Plastic and its accompanying hit "Video Killed the Radio Star." A stint with Ultravox followed before Zimmer next surfaced with the Italian avant-garde group Krisma; he then formed a partnership with film composer Stanley Myers, and together they founded the London-based Lillie Yard recording studio. Zimmer and Myers' movie work of the period, which included material for pictures including Moonlighting, Success Is the Best Revenge, Insignificance, and the acclaimed My Beautiful Laundrette, made significant strides in fusing the traditional orchestral aesthetic of film composition with state-of-the-art electronics, and proved highly influential on countless soundtracks to follow.

In 1986 Zimmer joined David Byrne and Ryuichi Sakamoto on their Oscar-winning score to The Last Emperor; his work on the apartheid drama A World Apart was his first major solo credit, and led to his Academy Award-nominated score for 1988's Best Picture-winning smash Rain Man. The following year Zimmer again composed the soundtrack for a Best Picture winner, this time Bruce Beresford's Driving Miss Daisy; a remarkably prolific writer, by the time the '90s dawned his music was a Hollywood staple, with a list of hits including Black Rain, Backdraft, Thelma & Louise, A League of Their Own, and Days of Thunder. Zimmer scored his biggest commercial hit in 1994 with his work on Disney's The Lion King; the film's soundtrack garnered countless awards, including an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and two Grammys. Later adapted for the Broadway stage, The Lion King took home the 1998 Tony for Best Musical as well.

In 1995, Zimmer also earned a Grammy for his work on Crimson Tide, which was honored as Best Original Score Written for a Motion Picture. Another Academy Award nomination followed for 1996's The Preacher's Wife; that same year, he earned BMI's prestigious Richard Kirk Award for lifetime achievement. 1997 saw Zimmer earn another Oscar nomination for his work on the James L. Brooks comedy As Good as It Gets, repeating the feat for the third consecutive year in 1998 with his score for the Terrence Malick masterpiece The Thin Red Line. His contributions to The Prince of Egypt also earned a Golden Globe bid earlier that same year.

The 2000s marked an auspicious time in the composer's career, as he continued scoring the biggest A-list films of the season, averaging two or three blockbusters a year, including Hannibal, Gladiator, The Last Samurai, and The Da Vinci Code. In 2007, Silva Screen Records released Film Music of Hans Zimmer, a double-disc set highlighting his achievements as a movie music-maker. Later in 2007, he reworked Alf Clausen's zany Simpsons theme into a traditional symphonic film score on The Simpsons Movie. As the 2000s came to a close and the 2010s began, Zimmer's name remained synonymous with blockbusters as he scored later installments in the Sherlock Holmes, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Batman franchises, including 2012's The Dark Knight Rises. His score to Christopher Nolan's 2010 film Inception was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Music and Original Score, and also earned a Saturn from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films for Best Music. Devastated by the Aurora shootings in 2012, Zimmer composed a choral arrangement of the The Dark Knight Rises theme, simply entitled "Aurora", to help raise money for the victims of the tragedy. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

Why do people keep leaving the This is Freaky Cause it Works Comments. If you are going to comment, comment about the artist not your stupid lives.
This freaked me out This isn't fake. Apparently, if you copy and paste this on ten comments in the next ten minutes, you will have the best day of your life tomorrow. You will either get kissed or asked out, if you break this chain you will see a little dead girl in your room tonight. In the next 53 minutes someone will say I love you or I'm sorry

he has definitely tapped into his subconscious mind... with feeling and passion that's real music.
sometimes in the future, if civilization still exist, his music will be seen then as Mozart and the like are seen today.
I love the Dark Knight Rises piece! The teasing climax and BOOM! the theme to Batman! Hans Zimmer is a Music God!
The dark Kight Rises is awesome. It's music like this that make me wish my life had a theme song and a song track. (Written by Hans Zimmer of course.)

*below* seems idiots make it to pandora as well
Don't read this because it really works. U will be kissed by the love of your life on the nearest possible Friday. Tomorrow will be the best day of your life. But if u don't post this u will die in two days. Now u have started reading so don't stop. Put this on at least 5 songs in 143 minutes and when done press f6 and your lovers name will appear on the screen in big letters. It's scary b/c it works.

This guys is awesome! He is a mastermind!

This man is one of my heros. He and his music is amazing. I didn't even knew he composed some of these pieces like Driving Miss Daisy and even Video Killed a Radio Star. Incredible!
I think Hans Zimmer can adapt to any "movie environment. " His scores reflect the feeling of the movies and none are alike (the scores for Gladiator and Pirates of the Caribbean have things that make them different as well).

I find it interesting how people are comparing John Williams and Hans Zimmer. Really, even though they're both movie composers, it's like comparing apples in oranges. John Williams is classical in style and Zimmer is a lot more modern, and telling which is better all comes down to personal opinion.

I don't know why people are saying all his scores sound the same. If Pirates sounds like Sherlock to you then you might need to get your ears checked. More importantly, both scores are perfect for the movies. The intricate and eccentric parts in Sherlock let you feel like you are the titular hero, and I don't think anyone can listen to the Pirates score without wanting to pick up a sword and go sailing on the high seas.
You are a very creative composer! I love your music so much!

Alf Clausen did NOT write the Simpsons' theme. That was Danny Elfman. Sloppy writing/rese a r c h
Enough of berating Zimmer for not being as good as John Williams. They are both fantastic composers.
I suppose it's personal preference, but i think that John Williams has a much more repetitive style than Hans. I think that Hans Zimmer has some wonderful music, especially things like Inception and Pirates- On Stranger Tides which is personally my favourite Pirates soundtrack.
*makes note of it and stretches Cupid bow* I'll let Mr. Zimmer know.
I am in love with Hans Zimmer. He needs to write a piece especially for me:)
The guy is talented, that is true, but he is not even close to the same as John Williams. Hans composes by committee. While John Williams sounds like Wagner and other great classical composers, he is unbelievably talented and if you want to hear his symphony, search it, it's really quite good. Hans is talented, but a B level talent, like most other people in the soundtrack industry. Kamen and giacchino are better because they sound different in all of their music. Hans has foghorns...
The bio is wrong here about Zimmer's work with the Batman Franchise. It says The Dark Knight Returns. He worked on The Dark Knight Rises. The score for the Dark Knight Returns was composed by Christopher Drake

Damn... this guy is awfully good to have scored major hits after major hits time and time again. No matter what you say, yeah, yeah, yeah... he borrowed this from that, and this from here, whatever... all art comes from somewhere else, in different shapes, tonalities and forms. Be it art, music or writing... art does not itself exist in a vacuum, it's malleable, ever changing, ever borrowed, ever inspiring in a million different ways...
He IS the next John Williams of movie scoring. That is, all of his soundtracks sound basically the same.

(Okay, that's unfair to John Williams. All of his scoring sounds like it was lifted from Wagner and a few other big Romantic composers, mostly because it is.)
He's the next John Williams of Movie Music score.
Hans Zimmer is to film music what a McDonald's hamburger is to a filet mignon. He sucks. He is a hack. His apparent success is a bigger mystery than crib death. And this is his score to Batman: nuh nuh nuh nuh...nuh nuh nuh...nuh nuh nuh...nuh nuh nuh.
I love his work Sherlock Holmes!

So inspirationa l . . . Zimmerman is the modern master of composition and all the films he has worked on would not have had the success they did had he lent his genius.

Hans Zimmer has been one of my favorite musical artists since i was little and was my main inspiration in school when i wrote music myself in highschool
I liked his film score for Troll 2.
hans zimmer is awesome, i love the batman sound track!
LOVE HANS ZIMMER! His music is so alive! And juct a shout out to all those movie sound composers. They often don't get much attention, but imagine movies without music!

God said let there be light and there was music.
Definitely one of the best!!
As i listen to Hans Zimmer and i read most of your comments for the most of you I agree Zimmer is one of are times greatest compozers. He makes the whole movie worth seeing I don't evan think we have begone to see his best works. This is a man who has such great talent and he puts his whole heart and soul into what he does. The movies of the 40s and 50s had this you went and watched and heard increadable sound tracks hollywood lost that for a long time but Hans Zimmer has brought that back.

Hans Zimmer is my greatest inspiration. Thank you for your epicosity.
Two corrections:
1. The Dark Knight Rises, not The Dark Knight Returns
2. Danny Elfman composed the Simpsons Theme

Hans Zimmer has incredible music
cookorbake4u
I first heard Hans Zimmer's music when I watched The Last Samurai
I was so into the music while watching the movie I just had to know who it was. i've been a fan ever since. I notice no one ever mentions that movie and I think it's some of the most beautiful he's written. If you're not familiar...d o yourself a favor!
Could someone please fix the typo? It's The Dark Knight Rises, not The Dark Knight Returns. Thanks!

Oh yeah. I love the man, the music, the genius, and the style!
