A duo whose ambient soundscapes have drawn comparisons to artists like Boards of Canada and Sigur Rós, Hammock formed in Nashville, Tennessee, in 2004. The duo was originally conceived by Marc Byrd and Andrew Thompson, who were both former members of the band Common Children. Hammock released their debut full-length, Kenotic, on their eponymous label in 2004; The Sleepover Series, Vol. 1 followed one year later. Hammock's profile was heightened in 2006 during the Winter Olympics when NBC played several of their songs during coverage of the figure-skating competition. Darla signed Hammock later that year, and the band's third album, Raising Your Voice... Trying to Stop an Echo, emerged in November.
Hammock's fourth full-length, Maybe They Will Sing for Us Tomorrow, came out in 2008. The album, which was a studio recording of music written to perform at the overseas debut art exhibition of Jónsi & Alex, found the duo striving for a more stripped-down, minimal sound. Released in 2011, the Longest Year EP reflected the trials and tribulations -- including the flooding of Byrd's home -- the band experienced in 2010. In late 2011 they released Asleep in the Downlights, an EP recorded with Steve Kilbey and Tim Powles, both alt-rock veterans and members of Australian band the Church. ~ Margaret Reges, Rovi
I picked up Departure Songs and have to say that it was one of the most amazing experiences in sound that I ever had. This music penetrates your very soul and I am building a Drones station if anyone would care to listen or gain exposure to more music like this.
I have been a fan of Marc Byrd's style ever since the first Common Children album great music and mood always uplifts and encourages me in times of trial!
Anything Marc Byrd touches seems golden. Great stuff guys, keep it up. For those who want more, check out his Common Children albums "Delicate Fade" and "The Inbetween Time".
This is my go to music for studying, yoga, sex, and of course playing glow in the dark Frisbee at 2 am in a high alpine meadow. Just fantastic ambient music.
This band is fantastic. Gonna pick up their albums now. As my good friend once said, this kind of music makes you nostalgic for the past, but optimistic for the future.
Hammock is amazing. so is Sugur Ros and Mogwai. i heard them all the first time on CMJ and fell in love. also, another good band is "this will destroy you" which has the same basic sound, but a bit harder. still great mind music though.
