Great White

While one infamous nightclub show eclipses their previous achievements, the hard rock/heavy metal band Great White would much rather you remember their Grammy nomination for Best Hard Rock Performance, the over six million records they sold, and their double platinum album ...Twice Shy.

Formed in the early '80s by vocalist Jack Russell and guitarist Mark Kendall, Great White were regulars of the L.A. club scene, playing their Led Zeppelin- and AC/DC-influenced metal to a quickly growing fan base. Local radio play and more gigging helped sell 20,000 copies of their independent releases, the Out of the Night EP and the full-length Shot in the Dark, both released in 1983.

The EMI label took notice, signed the band, and released its self-titled, major-label debut a year later. Shot in the Dark would be reissued by the label in 1987, the same year as the new album Once Bitten... appeared with the hit single "Rock Me." The album went platinum, but 1989's ...Twice Shy took things even further thanks in no small part to the massive success of the single "Once Bitten Twice Shy," a cover of a Mott the Hoople song written by Mott member Ian Hunter.

Long tours with Ratt and a co-headlined tour with Tesla kept the band out of the studio until 1991 when the polished Hooked appeared with two different album covers, one a provocative side shot of a mermaid hanging off an anchor in mid-air and one less scandalous with the mermaid still submerged. Hooked went gold while their 1992 follow-up, Psycho City, sold less, leading to EMI saying goodbye to the band with the 1993 compilation The Best of Great White.

Sail Away from 1994 found the band on Zoo, while 1996's Let It Rock was released by Imago. A live set of cover tunes featuring the work of their favorite band appeared as Great Zeppelin: A Tribute to Led Zeppelin, released by Cleopatra in 1999. That same year, Can't Get There from Here on the Portrait label gave fans their first taste of Russell's new writing partnership with longtime friend and former Night Ranger member Jack Blades. Another set of covers formed the 2002 Cleopatra album Recover, but this time the choices were surprising, with the Cult's "Love Removal Machine" and X's "Burning House of Love" getting the Great White treatment.

Forgotten by the mainstream, they were brought back into the limelight when pyrotechnics used by the band sparked a fire in a Rhode Island nightclub on February 20, 2003, killing 100 people, including the band's guitarist, Ty Longley. The 2004 reissue of Recover drew some media attention, since the Horizon label had given it a new and now morbid title, Burning House of Love. Trials concerning the fire continued on into 2006 as questions concerning who authorized the pyrotechnics were being investigated. The band spent the rest of the year touring and playing some benefit concerts for victims of the fire. In early 2007 they began celebrating their 25th anniversary with some West Coast shows that were tied to the release of VH1 Classic Presents: Metal Mania - Stripped, Vol. 3 and in the summer they released a new studio album, Back to the Rhythm. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi

Great White has two versions of their band touring right now. If you want to hear the songs the way you remember them, you'll want to listen Jack Russell's Great White!
Lost my virginity to my sexy husband 24 years ago.
These guys are amazing live....seen them many times and they never disappoint.. . . a n d if ya get a chance, listen to some of their Led Zep covers....it almost sounds better than Zep themselves.. .
thebartman.. . h a v e to disagree...d o not at all find them musically superior to their fellow glam/pop metal bands...in fact i find them very middle of the road. also, hair band is a misnomer. long hair has long been a part of rock and roll for decades.

Oh, and one more thing, it wasn't Great White that was playing there that night. It was Jack Russell and some musicians playing some Great White music. They were technically called Jack Russell's Great White.

Streeter, it was 100 people, and you're ignorant putz. I'm from RI, and I remember distinctly that the club owners and band were given permits by the city/state to have pyrotechnics . Even though the owners and band manager were found guilty, it was not their fault. But the stupid public wanted to make someone be the scapegoat. It was negligence on the part of the inspectors part. But for someone to have gone to jail for that was absurd and offensive. It was a tragic accident.

Outstanding band.
great white --a very undewrated band---a cut above the other hair bands
yeah baby!
This has become my favorite Great White song - thanks to a man that I love and have loved for the past 27 years.
This is my favorite Great White song .
us to listen to them at Artisea Music Works in Redondo Beach, along with Ratt and Motley Crue.
always will enjoy great white music
I agree with Sherjas that was a terrible, terrible accident...o n e accident however shouldn't erase the previous 20 yrs of music they put out.
Still waiting for the Hooked CD to enter the play list. Original Queen of Sheeba is one of their best songs followed by Heartbreaker . The whole disk rocks.
Just saw them live this week, what a terrific show....awes o m e live preformance. . . . g o see them!!!
sherjas
Streeter, that was a terrible, terrible accident and i am sure no one felt worse than the guys in the band...one accident shouldn't erase the previous 20 yrs of music they put out..get a brain!
Awesome;) I love em,i broadcast live on www.vaughnli v e . t v playing air guitar to Great White among others:)
Can't belive this band is still allowed to broadcast their music after they were responsible for killing 101 people in the Station Fire in Rhode Island,

Great band, one of the best of the the time. Live shows are amazing as Jack Russel sounds as good in concert as he does on the albums. Have had the priviledge of seeing them live 8 times (most recent was 2008) and have never been dissappointe d . The typical radio songs do not do the band justice as they are a true heavy blues rock band!! I hope to see Jack back performing with the band soon!!!

The greatest "hair band" of all time musically speaking. The are (were) greatly underrated and still today are sadly only known for their radio hits which don't necessarily show their true talents. Great White's live performances will make a fan out of almost anyone and is a mind blowing experience for those of us who love the music. There is no band other than Led-Zeppelin that can bust out bluesy-rock like Great White or could pull off a Led-Zeppelin cover tune. Fan friendly also!
Need songs from Hooked played. That was the best Great White CD followed by Psycho City. Just didn't get as much airplay.
My favorite band, hands down.
makes you wanna put a riped up shirt on and some short shorts and jump a round singin ur head off!!!
Still my favorite 80s band and in my top 5 of all time
Great band!!! They really knows how to Light up a stage!!! no pun intended.... .
To be honest...I'm not quite sure why Great White is considered to be...'underr a t e d ' . . . a n d so respected as a great hard rock band -compared to others from the same era. As far as I know, Great White only came out with 4 or at the very most 5 good hard rock songs, in their entire career...
not bad the crue is still better though
many of the Great White songs are featured in my collection. a personal favorite is "save your love", but to go back even further i would say "standin' on the edge" would be a huge favorite.
we're going to roll it and burn it all night..... Stick it.Great band, great songs-These guys rock
I have nothing to say...lol
i hated most of the "hair bands"

but great white separtes itself from most of the rest-----gre a t band

can play and sing circles around the likes of poisen, motley, ratt, whitesnake, et. all.

i also liked cinderella from this genre
I wish they had a sense of humor over that whole fan-fry situation. They should have owned it by putting out a live video soon after in which all the fans wore fireproof suits. F***...as if the loss of any Great White fan is something to whine about.
loved these guys music since the "stick it" days of '84 i believe, when they came out with their first EP. No glam crap here
great band....have seen them twice. Both times were very good. Too bad they are famous for a tragedy....a w f u l situation.

Great band. Immaculate when I saw them play live - but almost as good as Rush? I'm a die hard Rush fan, so I had to chime in. They're just not on the same par.
One of the best bands I've ever seen live. I saw them live at least five times and every time was GREAT. Almost as good as RUSH. Close
I am 43, I am a fan. There are / were a great band. The vocals are right on and musically, the were incredible. I miss this era.
im 59 and i guess i will always love this band and alot of the other bands from that time I still love the hair the guys had .I remember watching mtv just so I could see their hair

Aren't they in jail?
Where is the Discography, the best album ("Psycho City") isn't even up here!? How can a fan of Blues-Rock go on without "Maybe Someday", it's disgraceful, Pandora needs to do some work on their terrible "discography " of Great White. That said "...Twice Shy" is a classic, and "Once Bitten" is pretty good. And Gina Luv13 is right "Save Your Love" is amazing, espically the Greatest Hits version (it's edited, but it flows so nicely) which isn't here.
graskal
Great rock has no age barriers. My 10 and 3 year olds dig Great White and all the era tunes. At 48, I need the rock to help me roll. Ginaluv13 is right, Save All Your Love is totally sexy, sweaty, lovin' rock. Reminds me of Aldo Nova's Ball and Chain.
LOVE Grate White. I still listen to them even in my late 30s. I know some of you are saying " Its time to let go, the 80s are over" but this music has heart and soul! A cd mix of all thier albums are in my jeep, as other 80s groups.
My favorite song is House of Broken Love. The lyrics and guitar licks are awesome!
Can someone tell me where to see them, or where to look. Save your love is the alltime #1 love song of the 80's. And has even more meaning to me. My pandora name is Gina luv13 , and just look me up under great white radio, thanxs !!!!!
Where to begin to describe the awesome power of this band. The composition of the music and depth and power of the lyrics combined with vocals unmatched in interpratati o n and delivery. This band has it all.
