Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770) was an Italian composer and violinist best known for his "Devil's Trill" Sonata. Determined to become a virtuoso, Tartini studied the violin assiduously until he achieved his goal and became the soloist and leader of the orchestra at St. Anthony's in Padua, where he performed and taught for most of his life. Tartini is presumed to have composed around 135 violin concertos and 200 sonatas, though these numbers include spurious works. Despite an arm injury that limited his abilities, Tartini played and taught until 1768 and continued to compose until weeks before his death. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi
