English composer Gerald Finzi (1901-1956) is often labeled as a "pastoralist," although that is too general a term to describe his complete output. Finzi moved in the same circles as Vaughan Williams, Bliss, Holst, and Ferguson, but preferred the countryside and working alone. This is reflected in his personal, idiosyncratic music, where close imitative textures support the melody, and tonality and harmony frequently suggest nostalgia, melancholy, or a slower pace of life. He was influenced by the poetry of Thomas Hardy and the counterpoint and joy of Bach. His work list consists of several song cycles, choral music, and orchestral works. ~ Patsy Morita, Rovi
