I think BWilliams is right, this was likely recorded while he was ill with cancer, or shortly after he was attacked (or maybe even both). It would certainly have given him even more reason to re-record this track.
This was a great song but the original was the greatest ever! This sounds like George was somewhat weak when he sang it. He is a great singer and songwriter...for the ages!
