George Gershwin (Performer)

In a career tragically cut short in mid-stride by a brain tumor, George Gershwin (1898-1937) proved himself to be not only one of the great songwriters of his extremely rich era, but also a gifted "serious" composer who bridged the worlds of classical and popular music. The latter is all the more striking, given that, of his contemporaries, Gershwin was the most influenced by such styles as jazz and blues.

Gershwin's first major hit, interpolated into the show Sinbad in 1919, was "Swanee," sung by Al Jolson. Gershwin wrote both complete scores and songs for such variety shoes as George White's Scandals (whose annual editions thus were able to introduce such songs as "I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise" and "Somebody Loves Me").

After 1924, Gershwin worked primarily with his brother Ira as his lyricist. The two scored a series of Broadway hits in the '20s and early '30s, starting with Lady Be Good (1924), which included the song "Fascinatin' Rhythm." 1924 was also the year Gershwin composed his first classical piece, "Rhapsody in Blue," and he would continue to work in the classical field until his death.

By the '30s, the Gershwins had turned to political topics and satire in response to the onset of the Depression, and their Of Thee I Sing became the first musical to win a Pulitzer Prize. In the mid '30s, Gershwin ambitiously worked to meld his show music and classical leanings in the creation of the folk opera Porgy and Bess, with lyrics by Ira and Dubose Heyward. The Gershwins had moved to Hollywood and were engaged in several movie projects at the time of George Gershwin's death. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi

Man died way too soon. An American treasure.
I also love the piano rolls. Could they possibly been cut by four hands? There are so many stories about George. It is said the no one could play Gershwin as well as Oscar Levant. After Georges death, of course. No wonder--Osca r used to live with the Gershwin brothers when his wife would kick him out. According to what I have read, the Gershwins had a large apartment in NYC and the center living room was occupied by two pianos where they did their composing.

This is scary because it really works.
I just discovered of George Gershwins early demise. Based on what he accomplished in so few years, what might he have done with a longer life. Of Rhapsody in Blue, when ever I find myself in a funk, this is what I listen to and guess what, the funk does not last.
At the tender age of 11 my father stormed into my room enraged because I had awoken him at 7am listening to the soundtrack from Saturday Night Fever. He promptly confiscated all my records and provided me with one. Rhapsody in Blue. I played both sides (reverse side was American in Paris) over and over again and love it is to this day. I can't wait for the day when I get to pass along this amazing tradition to my own child. We should appreciate all types of music, from classical to rap.
I would love to have met him!
Andrew, you should learn to proof read before posting. Also, maybe you should re-read a comment before pointlessly disagreeing with it.
Pongo, I have to disprove you. I'm 16 and love this music, along with classic rock. This song is amazing.
Such talent. No one today can match his sophisticati o n and expertise. Musicians were so much better back then, unlike the pre-generate d music kids listen to today.
this makes me cry
Gershwin was able to capture so much in his music. I remember hearing Rhapsody in Blue the first time as a boy and I imagined it was the personal soundtrack for anyone walking in New York City. It sounded busy, energized and purposeful. I know that is more than a bit romantic, but he delivered this image to a Minnesota farm boy who wanted to see other places and live a different life. Somehow he gave me a taste of life in the big city.

Like others below I fell in love with Rapsody as a child playing my Dad's 45rpm records. I think it was a set of 3 or 4 platters. Paul Whiteman' s arrangement with Gershwin ( I think) on piano. That is my standard for Rapsody (right or wrong) but I adored hearing this version with the tempo at times faster than Whiteman's. This one seems smoother but man do Gershwins fingers fly. I would like to spend an evening listening to those 30 version. Thank you Mr. Gershwin.
I have about 30 versions of Rhapsody in Blue, including several by Georgr Gershwin himself. He was the greatest American composer I've ever heard. I also heve numerous versions of the Man I Love, One of the greatest songs ever written. It's a shame it'd a woman's song.

How do you only have a "short" bio of the greatest American composer?
My dad had a cassette of "Rhapsody in Blue" when i was a kid and I loved listening to it on road trips. LOVE IT! I need to get my own recording.

Incredible multi-talent e d artist. I, too, love Rhaspody in Blue; very stirring piece of music.
I love love love Gershwin, and Rhapsody in Blue is my all time favorite piece of music. If you can't hear it on here, itunes, youtube, record store, there are ways to hear it :)

rhapsody in blue is possibly the greatest complete score of music ever written listen to it 5 or 10 times then you will see it....

its annoying that they don't play rhapsody in blue.... but nonetheless, gershwin is still an amazing composer!
Scott Joplin and Hoagy Carmichael all dressed up in a 'Brooks Brother's' suit - and Harvard educated. NO ONE did it like Gershwin - hands down (hey, I didn't call on you!)

Rhapsody in blue is track 5 on The Piano Rolls. I used it as a song seed and they haven't played it for me yet. It is irritating because I have heard of it but never heard it and want to.
where is rhapsody in blue?? his best song ever, and they don't have it??? what's up with that???

I love Gershwin
Beautiful music.
More Gershwin!
But really Pandora needs to add the composer information to songs, so we can find more of his music, not necessarily played by him, or any other composer for that matter.

George Gershwin was the greatest.
I want american in paris and rhapsody in blue but you won't produce it. Why not ?
It's no wonder Gershwin as an artist is similar to Luckey-- he learned quite a few pianistic tricks from him!

More Gershwin!
erudetsky
It is a stretch to call Hoagy Carmichael, et al similar to George Gershwin.
sassyjan
I agree with both below
I would like MORE music by George Gershwin.
I want songs by various artists that were composed by George Gershwin
