Generation X

Although not as well as known as some of their peers (the Clash, the Sex Pistols, the Damned, etc.), first wave U.K. punk rockers Generation X burst onto the scene at the same time as the others. And while they enjoyed some moderate success in their homeland, Generation X would become better-known as the launching pad for their singer, Billy Idol, who would go on to achieve great commercial success come the '80s. Originally formed in 1976, Generation X (which was named after a book that focused on battles between the Mods and the Rockers during the '60s) was comprised of guitarist Bob Andrews, bassist Tony James, drummer Mark Laff, and fronted by Idol. The group was eventually signed up by Chrysalis Records, resulting in a self-titled debut album in 1978 (the U.S. and U.K. versions contained different track listings), as Generation X became one of the first punk bands to appear on the popular British TV music program Top of the Pops.

Unlike other punk bands, Generation X wasn't afraid to turn a blind eye to the supposed "accepted" ideals by punk rockers as they covered a John Lennon song on their debut ("Gimme Some Truth") and even hooked up with veteran rocker Ian Hunter to handle the production chores for their sophomore effort, 1979's Valley of the Dolls. Perhaps as a result, however, the group's musical direction became cloudy (some wanting the group to remain true to their punk roots, while others feeling that they should pursue a heavier rock sound) and bandmembers began to leave one by one, until Idol and James were the only remaining original members. Generation X managed to squeeze out one final album, 1981's Kiss Me Deadly (which contained the original version of a song that Idol would later cover as a solo artist and score a massive hit with, "Dancing With Myself"), before splitting up.

After the group's breakup, James later turned up as a member of '80s glam-punkers Sigue Sigue Sputnik, while Idol relocated to New York and embarked on his aforementioned solo career. As Idol's solo success created interest in his first band, numerous Generation X best-of and rarity collections began to crop up, including 1985's Perfect Hits: 1975-1981, 1998's Sweet Revenge, and 2000's Original Debut, the latter of which was a reissue of the U.K. version of Generation X's self-titled debut. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi

I've often thought that Sid Vicious' demise led to Billy's stardom but Billy did it right and better Billy Idol is awesome Sid Vicious is dead
Love em all but Billy's f***ing amazing. Can't match that lung power!!!
and Sid's image was designed for him by Malcolm McLaren....
missycat_97
Valley of the Dolls is the BEST! Tons of memories...
Billy stole his whole image from Sid. He was a rich kid from the burbs, real punk huh? Poser
Billy Rocks!
one of my favorites
Love the sound and Idol is way better solo.
Seriously?!? ! This is one of the THE BEST punk bands from that era. Gen X is effin bad a**!! I'm reading some of your comments on this song and on the band, and your comments suck. for real, what kind of music do you listen to when you think Gen X is justok or saying stuff like Billy was better by himself?!?! Gen X is legendary!
billy idol sounded way better with generation x, but by himself he's alright

These guys were kind of ok back in the day, but def. kind of pop punk. I guess this is why if it ain't Stiff Little FIngers..... I ' l l just listen to MINOR THREAT.
How could Idol leave the band hanging, when he was one of the last to leave? Facts are your friends. Besides I think this sound was better
sweetpeaz98
billy idol is way better by him self
Billy at his best...
day by day is an awesome song
Top band, but that pic on their bio is totally misleading. Unfortunatel y it shows Mr Idol with those horrible dreds he sported in the 90's. Cocaine...it ' s a helluva drug.
Billy blows on his own. Like the P Furs, Ultravox, Clash, etc.... only these bands 1st maybe 2nd records are of any value to the genre and era. AND THAT really is the difference between you and me and this time in music history when this stuff turned into either one two other directions; the likes of the Thomson Twins/SMiths or speed metal TSOL (neither I like). PEACE.
billyy is better on his own me thinks
i have to agree: billy left the band hanging. that said, gen x has it going on. clever lyrics and strong musicianship .
timothysteph e n s o n 1
idol basically left the band hanging

Super tight punk band. Bob Andrews was a killer guitarist. Listen to freak out solo on Youth Youth Youth. Running With The Boss Sound is a fantastic Rock N Roll shout out epic.
classic punk rock
Love this band, and when we found Sigue Sigue Sputnik in '89 we thought they were awesome. The days when you had to go scour the local record store to discover new music not on the radio!
WORD
Great punk band, great guitarist and awesome tunes.
YEYEYEY
salamandroid
this is the singers first band. This is way better than his solo stuff

This is ok, but the singer's first band "White Wedding" is way better.
