November 21, 1852 - December 15, 1909
born in Villarreal, Castellón, Spain, composed during the Romantic period
Francisco Tárrega (1852-1909) was a Spanish composer and guitarist active in the late 19th century and at the turn of the 20th, noted for his important contributions to the solo guitar repertoire. While the guitar had become eclipsed by the piano in recitals, Tárrega gave it a new prominence through his virtuosity. Tárrega composed over 80 pieces for his instrument, and his guitar transcriptions of famous Romantic piano pieces number over 100. Perhaps the most famous of his own works are the Recuerdos de la Alhambra and Danza mora, though his preludes and etudes are well-known to guitar students. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi

Recuerdos is played so much that it almost bypasses some people nowadays. It really is a beautiful piece of music and Tarrega will always be a genius even if his efforts are only mentioned as a brief footnote in music history.
