One of the most popular fusion and light jazz groups to emerge during the 1980s, Flim and the BB's comprised bassist Jimmy Johnson, keyboardist Billy Barber, percussionist Billy Berg and reeds player Dick Oatts. (For the record, "Flim" was an old nickname of Johnson's, while "the BB's" originated from Barber and Berg's shared initials). Debuting in 1982 with the album Tricycle, Flim and the BB's' fusion sound proved ideally suited for the onset of the compact disc boom; they were among the first artists to record utilizing digital technology, and albums like 1985's Big Notes and 1987's Neon quickly found a following not only among contemporary jazz fans but also among tech-heads. After 1988's Further Adventures, the quartet departed indie label DMP for Warner Bros., making their major-label debut a year later with New Pants. 1992's This Is a Recording was their final effort. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

Such positive music...crackerjack musicians with a sense of whimsy and a flair for the unexpected. Like listening to the soundtrack of a movie you'd love that doesn't exist.
Missing is the album 'Tricycle' whose title track was a huge radio hit in 1988. Other albums included 'Neon' and Billy Barber had a solo record that was well received which came out in 1991.
While on the surface they sound like the Yellowjackets (who are nothing to sniff at) or the Rippingtons, their classical training and depth of musical background is still unique 20 years later, with dissonant and off-beat riffs blending in with the usual smooth jazz flow to delight the mind and keep the heart leaping. You'll always be listening for the next change in mood or imagery that is just around the corner.
I am proud to say I own their entire discography including Vintage BB's which is missing from the list above. Billy Berg is also well known as a Disney animator. Among his many credits is the lead animator for the Aladdin character.
have you ever heard of the cd Tricycle. these guys are clasically trained, I first listen to them back in 84, and we need them now

This is my favorite band of all times, I have every CD they ever released. Great with headphone or a good set of the original 80's Polk speakers and a Carver amp, It just doesn't get any better!!!
I remember first hearing these guys when Tricycle came out in the 80's. I've always loved the different sounds these guys would bring to their recordings. Almost like a grand experiment that went very right.

The first digital music I ever heard was the first track of Tricycle. A friend had a portable DAT and put headphones on me. Then he cranked it up. I was hooked!

I was turned on to Flim & the BB's in 1989 by someone who bought their "Big Notes" CD and decided that they didn't like it. They gave me the CD and I have been a fan of the group ever since. I would love to hear them do something new.
